Re: [TWC] Level3 breaks public peering

I am just hopeful this is resolved soon. I may have to drop Road Runner and sign up with Adelphia, who is not on Level3.

I hope your were joking - Adelphia is in the process of being acquired by TW and Comcast. In anycase, if you are currently on TW, the only way to get Adelphia is to move - there are no areas where Adelphia and TW are both available.

My neighborhood has Adelphia and Road Runner available. Zip code 32818 Orlando. My neighbor has Adelphia, I have Road Runner. Maybe it does not work that way in your town but many larger cities have multiple cable/internet companies in the same neighborhoods.

I was able to access all sites that the peering change affected as of last night. It seems that at least in CFL, RR has updated their routing tables to work around the problem. Routing updates do take some time to propegate.

Not here it hasn't and i'm one of their business class customers. Fuck Timewarner, this is getting rediculous. Why wont TimeWarner peer with Cogent? That would make sense considering they are a Connection provider.

And screw you people who say its cogent's fault. I've been a customer of them for 2 years, and this has been the first "outage" which isn't their fault considering level3 did this to several companies.

Grr so much profit loss due to productivity these past few days... Level3 is way out of line. I can only imagine the profits being lost from individuals and small businesses. They are the ones being hit the hardest not Cogent. I understand business but when it gets in the way of moral you have to draw a line. It effects way too many.

In my opinion it is cutting deeper than just Cognet bound traffic. It seems roadrunner is "trying" to fix things but it just isn't working out for them and is causing problems beyond the level3 hop.

I live in CFL, Orlando (32703) and have RR. I'm still not able to access photobucket and others.

Any provider with a connection to one of the companies (cogent, level3) and at least one other provider should not have been affected at all, unless their own routing was broken. Having been an L3 customer myself I know I always accepted their routes, but used them only as a last-resort choice.

Here in Houston I never noticed any connectivity issue either at home (RR) or work (multiple carriers, one of them being cogent)

Yeah CFL Orlando RR here and still not able to access my servers in Texas. I will be patient and keep trying and give a few days to get worked out before making any internet provider changes. If it's still not working by this time next week, it's time to do something about it.

This is FRONT PAGE NEWS here at BBR.

BBR NEWS

There are some very interesting posts in the feedback - and the "DISCUSSION CONTINUES" link in the main body also has some good information.

Changing routes is NOT a simple thing to do - and if it gets fouled up the problems COULD get even worse.

RR did not create this situation - but they need to get cracking on re-routing.

when i talked to them both yesterday and today they gave me a reply such as:

Jason H> It is unfortunate you feel this is a Road Runner issue. The problem lies with other networks and not Road Runner. We do not have any say in the way they run their services or how they repair them.

typical rr ,oh well... dumping them

Today we were informed by Cogent (where our servers are located) that Level3 was going to charge other ISPs to run traffic on their network. Unfortunately, this is a problem with two very large tier-1 ISPs. As a result of this some of our members might not be able to access our servers. Contacting your ISP to complain, should eventually help put pressure on Level3 to change their policies. We are currently working on a temporary fix, and will offer any members an incentive for staying with us through this frustrating time. We appreciate your patience and support in solving this issue. The following links are from third party sites that explain the situation more thoroughly. »telephonyonline.com/home/news/co···_100505/ »Level 3 Peering Changes Causing Headaches

That's the "script" that L1 Techs were given to use as a standard response. And it is, at least partially, correct !

If you're unhappy with RR - please feel free to dump them at any time. Just do it - and don't keep telling us about it.

I'm not excusing them for not having the ability to more quickly address routing issues - but given the size and complexity of their network, they should be given some slack (48 hrs?) before people go apesh*t. If it was a complete and total blackout I'd agree with you.

And business customers with remotely hosted services should get top priority.

Last I checked peering is not free and cogent is responsible for paying the fee's for the over usage. Sounds plain and simple to me.

By they way I am having no issues at all.

This is clearly a Cogent caused problem as they knew for months that if they did not peer equally and/or pay for the xport that Level3 would cut them off. They were absolutely given more than adequate time to correct the matter and they chose NOT to do so. The deadbeats got exactly what they asked for. It is a shame that the RR folks have to suffer because of the Cogent management stupid decisions. There is "No Free Lunch."

level3sucks

@rr.com

Would you shut up about free lunch BS, peering is between 2 ISP's its not like it was costing level3 anything per a mbit, because it was bandwidth already on a lan, but they wanted to charge cogent for it, so they would make double, money from cogent, and money from their end user.

Plain and simple, LEVEL3 GOT GREEDY.
