| [Help Me] DWL 2100AP only 24mps throughput
Hi all, I'm new on here, but I'm hoping you can help.
I have 2 wireless 2100AP's. One is in my house set as an access point, the other is set as a bridge to extend the signal to another house.
When I am transferring data through my AP I only get 24mps throughput, but my laptop reports I'm connected at 54mps. Even if the laptop is sat right next to the 2100 I only get 24mps - signal strength says excellent.
I am FTP'ing from laptop to XBOX, and this is the route it takes:
Laptop - 2100AP - Speedtouch 546 wired router - XBOX
The 2100AP is wired to the speedtouch and the speedtouch is wired to the XBOX (via a 4 port switch on the back of the speedtouch)
If I connect my laptop wired to the speedtouch, I get 100mps throughput as I would expect, but only 24mps through the 2100 :-( |

| You are confusing throughput with datarate.
With a wired connection, you should expect to get throughput of 2/3rds or so of your datarate. You lose a third or so to the protocol and network conditions.
With a wireless connection, you should expect to get throughput of 1/3rd or so of your datarate. You lose 2/3rd or so to the protocol, noise on the air, collissions, and etc..
And every time you transition from one media to another, you should reapply the math.
So if you have a 108 Mbps wireless connection, 36 Mbps is primo from point A to point B.
If you're going from point A, bridged wirelessly to point B, to wireless client C ... 12 Mbps would not be unreasonable. -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA ... the browser you can trust: NCSA Mosaic ... |

| Thanks for your reply on this one - I'm a bit puzzled though - I appreciate there is a small overhead on a wired connection, but it's no-where near 1/3
I can reliable get 100mb transfer rate from the XBOX when I wire the laptop into the router give or take a few kb.
I have previously had an 11mbs wireless setup in the same way and that gave me 11mb transfer rate, again give or take a few kb.
I'm in the same room as the wireless router sat about 5ft away, so I would expect at least 40mb throughput.
I have even tried plugging the access point directly into the XBOX with a crossover cable and still only get 24mps. |

| It really depends on the number of other clients, then length of the cable, whether any filtering-routing-switching is occurring, and whether the network parameters are the defaults or if the speed is optimized (either statically or dynamically).
90%+ is not surprising. I use 2/3rds as a rule of thumb to say that if you are getting 2/3rds, you do not have a substantive problem. I wouldn't expect a customer to spend money to fix it. If you are getting 1/2 or 1/3rd, you do have a fundamental problem. -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA ... the browser you can trust: NCSA Mosaic ... |
