| Qwest DSL Modem
Hi.
The ActionTech modem I got from Qwest just plain sucks. I'm looking for a DSL modem compatible with Qwest. Anyone have any recommendations?
I've had Qwest for only a few days now. I've just switched from Cable.
The DSL modem must have wireless capability, and hopefully have some kind of repeater component I can buy with it, or add on later. Thanks. |

Please elaborate on the work "Sucks". While I find the actiontec's wireless capability lacking. Especially in range and stability, I think as a modem, with the most recent firmware, it is very stable and does a good job.
I use a Linksys wrt54gs wireless/4 port router after the actiontec. This takes care of my 4 wired computers and my 2 wireless. The wireless in the linksys is much better.
As recommended, you could go with a cisco 678. Some people loose quite a bit of upload bandwidth using the cisco. It's a hit or miss situation. There are quite a list of other modems available that work on qwest. I believe this forum has a listing of all of them. Basically though, those who aren't hard core cisco and nothing else will work, find the actiontec gt701 quite acceptable.
Let us know what about the gt701 you think sucks and maybe we can see if it's just a setting or two that can be changed. Don't mention wireless issues because we all agree that wireless sucks on it and anyone really interested in wireless and home networks usually add a wireless router, e.g. linksys, Netgear, D-Link to their setup. I have yet to find a modem currently available on the market that is truely incompatible with Qwest service. Granted, Qwest only officially supports a select few modems.

The trick is to make sure that you can update the VPI and VCI settings. If I remember correctly, it's 32 and 0 for Qwest.

All CAP only modems are incompatible with new accounts at Qwest. The Cisco 675 (for example).
So the modem must support DMT.
Anyone else care to add some other known requirements...?

| Sucks, meaning not what I was used to before when I used Cable. You've already mentioned short wireless range. I also wanted a web interface that was more straight forward. All the threads I had to read through to get port forwarding to work is testament to bad design on Actiontec's part. I know I'm not going to be going in it when I have it all set up, but right now, I know I don't have it all set up. What took me minutes to port-forward, QoS, MAC filtering, etc on my wireless router, I still don't understand on Actiontec's modem. I still have no idea how to block the internet from the web interface and telnet. Even with the supposed "firewall" on, it wasn't blocked. I'm sure that has already been answered on this board, but I have yet to find it. I don't disagree when you say as a modem, it works great. I'm sure it does it's job well (it's what I am currently using), but it doesn't suit what I am looking for ... wireless with an optional repeater addon capability, 4 port switch, an easy and simple interface.
Anyway, the discussion seems to be going well. I'd like to hear what everybody else says. Thanks to all that replied. |

It's VPI 0, VCI 32, with a few exceptions for certain ISPs- for AOL (eww) customers it's 0.35; can't remember if Earthlink is the same or not. Probably 99% of Qwest ADSL customers are going to be set at 0.32 though. |

Of these I think they are primarily only distributing the Actiontec® GT701.

G.dmt modulation
VPI/VCI can be changed to 0/32 (currently 0/35)
Protocol can be changed to PPPoA (currently PPPoE)
Just curious.

I'm trying to set up remote desktop with the qwest actiontec modem and linksys wrt54g router but I can't seem to get it to work; I can remote from my laptop to desktop when I am within my home network, but can't remote in when I am away from home using my computer at work; all computers use XP Pro |

Any suggestions on this issue? I've set up my dsl modem (by Actiontech), with Qwest service, but my Internet access only works with the ethernet cable connected to the powerbook. It is a wireless modem, but I cannot get the laptop to recognize the signal. Is it a setup step I missed? I have used my laptop in other places with a wireless signal broadcast, and it automatically recognizes it. Otherwise, service has been great. Just hoping to be able to roam around while connected, without having to plug in. Thanks,
