Netgear Mr814 v3 and Verizon DSL Westell 6100 prob

I looked through the forums and didnt see an answer to my question so hopefully this hasnt already been covered.

I recently moved into an apartment that has Verizon dsl with a Westell 6100 modem. I went out today and purchased a Netgear mr814 v3. I have two computers connected to this wireless network, but I cannot keep a full connection. The wireless signal strength is high, but the pages continually fail to load or are at times slow. Other times it is quite fast. I played around with the tweaking device, but that didnt improve conditions.

Also, when the modem is plugged directly into the computer, it registers a 100 mb connection and is super fast and reliable.

I guess the problem is with the netgear router, but I find it strange that I have some connection, just a poor one usually.

do you have the correct port on the router connected to the westell modem ? there is a specific wan port that must be used , can't just use any one on the back .

yes, the router is connected into the correct port. I am actually posting using the wireless network. It works great sometimes, but 80% of the time the pages are super super slow or wont load at all. This, however, does not occur if I bypass the router and connect directly to the modem via ethernet cable. Also tried connecting from the router to the computer via ehternet cable, but this did not improve conditions.

also, aim/msn only occasionally will load. most times I receive a no connection message, but after trying multiple times it will sometimes go connect

bthon I have no direct experience with the westell 6100, but I have run into similar issues before. You may want to check if the Netgear and the DSL modem both have Firewalls. If they both have a FW, try disabling the one in the router and see if that helps things any.
2 active firewalls can cause strange issues for sure.

Thanks! I disabled the router firewall, but not much improvement...

That model is a combo modem/router from what I have read. Did you change the settings in your router accordingly so they are not conflicting with each other?

If not, check out this thread. Different router but same principle. »Problem - Westell used with WRT54G router. Help!

Incidentally, that 100mbps that you see on your desktop computer pertains to the capability of your NIC card, not the actual internet connection speed.
I use the verizon speed check but it can be flaky. »infospeed.verizon.net/speedtest/···500k.asp

Also I have noticed that my connection gets wacky at night with speeds all over the board.

Thanks for the speed check. looks like my one laptop on the wireless network is getting 1.7ish. I tried to follow those steps for bridging ect, but I must have messed up something as I lost my internet connection light and had to start fully over. Now I am back to where I was except it wont load the modem page 192.168.1.1 but I can load the netgear router manager page. Its been too long since I have set up a wireless network and I only understand so much from the other forums.

If you cannot access the router now, then it sounds like you successfully put in in bridge mode.
Here are additional steps to setup in bridge mode from verizon that should help you:
»Re: Westel and Linksys router both use the same IP?!

This is a good time to get out the manual for the router if you have one. If not, you can download it --->> »kbserver.netgear.com/products/MR814v3.asp

Lots of info in the manual to help you.

The netgear connection wizard says I am using PPPoE instead of DHCP. Most of the forums are for connections with DHCP. I am in Rockville, MD with Verizon DSL and I am not sure if PPPoE is standard for this area. I cannot get back on the 192.168.1.1 page even though I reset both the router and modem and the modem internet light is on. The internet connection is back to unstable and slow, but at least partially working on one laptop. Thanks for the suggestions thus far!

ok, I put in the bridge mode and made sure that the router and modem are on different Lan settings 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.1.1 and once again I am stuck with an inconsistent connection. also tried changing the MTU. I first tried 1400 then 1500 then 1492 based on different forums. I am really lost here now.... thanks for the help though!

I was going to say ditch the netgear wizard and enter the settings manually via 192.168.1.1.

Set the MTU to 1492. Now that you've put the modem in bridge mode and reset the router, make certain that you don't have two firewalls enabled. Make sure to click apply after changes. I noticed sometimes these routers don't take the changes on the first try.
You are PPPoE if you had to enter a verizon username & password for log-in the first time you set up your dsl modem. Also, if you are in an x-bell atlantic service area, then you are pppoe.
A thought. Have you done a tweak test via this site? Might be able to tweak further now that you have the router and modem configured correctly. Far as speed tests go, I'd use the ones here on the site and do a half dozen each from the desktop and the laptop to get an average. Oh, and if you haven't been doing so, reboot your computer after you make changes in the router so the modem can adjust to the changes as well. On the WAN setup section, put a check in the "connect automatically" box. On the LAN IP setup section, put a check in the "use router as DHCP server". All this means is that your router will assign IP addresses to machines on your LAN. My router is set to 192.168.0.1, and I use 192.168.0.33 for starting IP - 192.168.0.37 for ending IP (33-37 because I have five computers that may be connected all at once).

If your speeds are still flaky I don't know short of trying different firmware. I haven't read up enough on that particular model but I have installed them for clients without incident.
I have on occasion had to return a couple of wireless routers for various reasons such as some of them wouldn't hold their settings, and others would drop the internet connection intermittently. I'd say if your problems persist change it for a new router.

thanks a lot for all the advice. Most of your suggestions I have already enabled such as setting MTU to 1492, running the tweak test through this site, and disabling the firewall. Its not so much my speed that is inconsistent, but the actual connection. My speeds are decent enough when connected, but I just constantly have short term loss of connections when loading pages, connecting to messengers, ect. Both computers sort of stutter now too occassionally when typing in web addresses ect. Ill just keep reading all the forums though. Thanks again!

bthon I understand you've done all those things already but those things all have to be rechecked after the changes you made to your router & modem. Nevertheless, you should not be experiencing intermittent loss of connection with the router in place. If it were mine, I wouldn't waste any more time on with it than you have already - I'd either return it to the store if you still can, or I'd call netgear tech support and get an rma and send it back to them in exchange for another.
Good luck with it.

Re: Netgear Mr814 v3 and Verizon DSL Westell 6100 prob

try copying the DNS numbers you get from the Westell into the Netgear. I have Westell 6100 also, and Netgear MR814 v3. Had same connection problem as you described. MR814 does not receive DNS from Westell for some reason. Simply entering the numbers directly fixed my issues. Hope that helps.

Luppy...did you figure out the problem? I have the same issue. I recently ordered Verizon DSL and installed according forum guidelines. BUT my connection is intermittent...I have to refresh a site several times before the connection goes through. No problems when I directly connect through the modem. You think it's a DNS issue?

man, i am having the same issue, driving me crazy. put the modem in bridge mode and the connection is still flaky. if i go to www.yahoo.com it will come up after like 20 seconds. if i then go to mail.yahoo.com it wont come up at all, getting a time-out message. if i then refresh it, it comes up fine in like 3 seconds and as long as i'm in that domain everything is fine. if i then go to say news.yahoo.com it times out. refresh, then works, etc. this is for any site...
i have the wgr614 but imagine this is the same issue. i've also tried adjusting mtu size using drtcp and within the router.

It sounds like your dns is bad. Try finding ip address of the website and using it directly. If the first page comes up quickly your dns server is flaky. Find a reliable one and use it.

Re: Netgear Mr814 v3 and Verizon DSL Westell 6100 prob

After nearly a month, I have finally gotten the netgear and westell to work together properly. I had followed all the directions for setting up the bridge mode, updating firmware, and manually entering IP and DNS information. I knew I was close, since one computer worked great through the ethernet connection, so I reset just the router one more time, while leaving the modem setting in bridge mode. I allowed the router to find the IP address on its own, and for some reason it all works great now... Thanks for everyones suggestions. I really appreciated the help. I wish I could post more on the steps in correcting this error, but I tried so many combinations of things, it is hard to know exactly what worked.
