I was going to say ditch the netgear wizard and enter the settings manually via 192.168.1.1.
Set the MTU to 1492. Now that you've put the modem in bridge mode and reset the router, make certain that you don't have two firewalls enabled. Make sure to click apply after changes. I noticed sometimes these routers don't take the changes on the first try. You are PPPoE if you had to enter a verizon username & password for log-in the first time you set up your dsl modem. Also, if you are in an x-bell atlantic service area, then you are pppoe. A thought. Have you done a tweak test via this site? Might be able to tweak further now that you have the router and modem configured correctly. Far as speed tests go, I'd use the ones here on the site and do a half dozen each from the desktop and the laptop to get an average. Oh, and if you haven't been doing so, reboot your computer after you make changes in the router so the modem can adjust to the changes as well. On the WAN setup section, put a check in the "connect automatically" box. On the LAN IP setup section, put a check in the "use router as DHCP server". All this means is that your router will assign IP addresses to machines on your LAN. My router is set to 192.168.0.1, and I use 192.168.0.33 for starting IP - 192.168.0.37 for ending IP (33-37 because I have five computers that may be connected all at once).
If your speeds are still flaky I don't know short of trying different firmware. I haven't read up enough on that particular model but I have installed them for clients without incident. I have on occasion had to return a couple of wireless routers for various reasons such as some of them wouldn't hold their settings, and others would drop the internet connection intermittently. I'd say if your problems persist change it for a new router. |
