1 edit | WRT54G v5 Warning
NO 3rd Party Firmware exists for this model. the problem is the amount of RAM (2/8Mb) and the OS is VxWorks and not Linux.
If you want to use 3rd Party Firmwares, DO NOT BUY A WRT54G v5
To find out which WRT54G you are buying look at the Serial number on the box or the Unit itself.
There are serveral versions of the WRT54G, different powersupplies, chipsets, features, though all based on similar firmware.
To find out which model you have please go by the Serial Number of your WRT54G.
This is the only true way of finding out what one you have.
Known serial numbers (first 4 characters) vs versions / Chipsets:
CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset CDF2 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0 / ADM6996L Chipset CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset CDF9 = WRT53G v3.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset CDFA = WRT54G v4.0 / BCM5352E Chipset
CDFB = WRT54G v5.0 / BCM5352EKPB Chipset --

| reply to grcore Except that the entire WRT54G* (G* = G and GS) series already runs Linux and has since day 1.

| said by koitsu :Except that the entire WRT54G* (G* = G and GS) series already runs Linux and has since day As far as I know, Linksys has never marketed a product using Linux as an advertised feature. It may be that due to the increased sales of the WRT series (the models that have 3rd party development firmwares), they wish to keep those sales going. Which only makes perfect sense.
Note, this is all speculation for now but it is the only explanation I can offer....

| I did a Google on WRT54GL and it would seem that the WRT54GL is simply a WRT54GS with an ADSL modem built in...thus the "L".

According to linksys.it it is a "Wireless G Router With Linux". No idea what that means... We'll have to wait and see. -- »www.hyperspacehome.com Home of HyperWRT & HyperWAP, custom firmware for the Linksys WRT54G, WRT54GS and WAP54G. |

| It is very possible that Linksys would regret the decision to switch from Linux to VxWorks for WRT54G(S) routers. The street price for WRT54G(S) router is consistently higher than for similar models from Netgear and D-Link. The only distinguishing factor was open source firmware and therefore third party versions.
If a new version of WRT54G is similar to Netgear RP614 the street price should reflect that. I see RP614 for ~$20 very often. |

| reply to linksysinfo Sales figures are going to fall once the news of this gets out. The enthusiast demographic has been keeping the sales of these routers higher than what's normal.
Once the stock of the older revisions dry up then you're going to start seeing crazy bidding on eBay for these things.
This should give a kick in the pants, though, to third-party development on non-Linksys Linux-based routers, though. |

| reply to linksysinfo I received this after contacting Linksys Sales:
James,
Actually, the Linux version is still in production for companies and people such as yourself. The model number is WRT54GL.

...I'd estimate around 2-3 weeks for this router to be available through distribution (Ingram Micro, Tech Data or D&H). Also, check with our customer service team to see if they can swap out a version 5 WRT54G for a previous version.

@195.246.x.x | reply to linksysinfo Dear friends,
Truth is that WRT54G v5 isn´t Linux any more, but Linksys lounched new product WRT54GL, wich has all features of WRT54G v4...including Linux.
And it works BRILLIANT. For same price! Linksys rocks! |

| reply to linksysinfo I have to commend Linksys for such a move, but it would have been more logical to leave things as is regarding Linux and model numbers. It's very confusing doing it the way they did.
The VxWorks model should have been the one assigned a new model number. |

The VxWorks model should have been the one assigned a new model number.
However, now they have a way to quantify what share of the market is buying because of the Linux support!
Had they given the VxWorks model a new number, then it'd be harder to tell if recomendations/buys came directly from Linux support -- Richard Nelson |

| reply to linksysinfo I just spoke with a sales rep at Linksys and he said that they are creating a new SKU to separate the V4 and V5 into separate products and will continue to sell both.
Now the problem is to get newegg to go look on the shelf and tell me what they're going to send me if I order one! |

| reply to linksysinfo FWIW, places that don't sell large volumes of routers still have the v4 models around.
IE, walmart, office depot, samsclub, etc.
All the other big stores around here (chicago burbs) have already depleted their old v4 inventory. -- Insanity is living in a state of disillusion. |
