Bittorrent

I was trying to seed some podcasts and iptv shows on bittorrent today. I limit my upload at 15k/sec. So they are off seeding at a total of 15k/sec and im trying to view some webpages. My internet is crawling trying to view just forums and stuff. The upload should not effect anything because its only 1/2 of what insight gives. I close azureus and the webpages load up fast again (of course). So for a test i begin uploading a file to my website ftp server. It is uploading at 20k/sec. I try going to the webpages again and they load up fine. So basically
15k/sec up bittorent = slow webpage loading
20k/sec up FTP = fast webpage loading

So i did a search and see some stuff about insightbb limited p2p traffic. So is my entire bandwidth getting limited because bittorrent is going? That is BS...

This might not be 100% Insight's fault. Azureus in the past has been known to be a resource hog. This could also be a setting needing tweaked within the client. I've found that the current build of that software runs smoother for me than any other previous build. Resource usage seems to have improved.

Although packet shaping software has been known to have some really adverse affects. A search of many of the ISP forums and my blog has many articles in regards to this.

As easy as it would be to put the blame on Insight. It really may just be a software related issue.

BT in general is a resource hog. The high number of stateful connections can bog down consumer level routers. What kind of a router do you have?

It may also help to prioritize outgoing ACK's.

If you're running WinXP SP2, turn down the number of outbound connections to below 10 under Tools -> Options -> Connections ->> Max Sim outbound connections. Or get a third-party fix for it such as »www.lvllord.de/

I have to ask....are you running Azureus with a router? If you are then I may have a fix for you.

insight will be using sandvine in all markets to manage there p2p trafic. This has been coming for years and personally like the idea as I am in a college town and insight oversold with there college package and the network went to sheet. I download from newsgroups but most people won't pay for a download.

Glimmer,

When is this going to happen? How do you know things like this? Do you have contacts on the inside?

Thanks!

Sandvine isn't any big secret. And it's most likely a good reason some of use are seeing the speed related issues we are. Although Insight will in fact deny this. This forum has many previous threads in regards to the topic. And a quick search of Google or my blog »iggyz.com will bring up those topics as well.

Yes some people here do have an "inside track" so to speak. Yes some of the people who post here may in fact even be Insight employees. Many of them have kept an eye on this forum for years. One of the more positive aspects of this forum - depending on the day - in my opinion.

Soybeans don't smell like poo. But the odor does take a bit of getting used to. It's not always there - but driving over the Staley viaduct with the windows down could be an experience for the uninitiated.

Millikin and Richland - 2 colleges equals college town. Although something tells me most people wouldn't have this be the first thing come to mind in regards to Decatur.

zIggy, you are deviating to the topic. We are not here to defend the fact Decatur smells like poo. We're here to discuss helping this user out with his BIT TORRENT. Torrent is plural for torrent. That's why I said BIT TORRENT instead of BIT TORRENTS.

I think his woes are fixed. Shall we do our celebration dance?

You became a MOD when? I guess your deviation was just fine eh? Funny how that works. If you so desire hit that MOD button below my post. That is what it is there for.

I've done more than my fair share of trying to offer help around here. I think a slight off topic comment is allowed from time to time. I think a quick check of other forum threads will show that what has occurred here is within the forum rules.

But thanks for trying to be my parental unit for the day.

and champaign urbana is still full of homos like you that have nothing better to do than complain how a town smells. Take away UofI and how big would C/U be. Without tate and lyle and adm I would be out of business and looking for a new town. Enjoy insight blocking your torrents MUHHAA.

Might try limiting bittorent even lower? Reason being, unless you're using a utility such as NetLimiter, all Bittorent clients that I've used actually have 'burst' events--if you open Taskmanager and click on your Network tab I'll see my upload bandwith spike from my 10k cap to 20k+/sec briefly. Which is why I use Netlimiter, nice ole hard cap.

But this is for me afterall, that and I have 45k/sec with Insight.

*ahem* Can you say VPN?

I use my bit torrent for legal purposes. A hobby of mine is making sound files and I enjoy it quite a bit. Many people love the stuff I make and it would be too costly to keep it on a web server or sending it to one person at a time. I'll just VPN it if they block it. The stuff I make is from scratch, COPYRIGHTED BY ME, so I hold the legal rights to anything I make and I can distribute it anyway that I deem necessary. So yes, bit torrent is the best delivery method for this. I will continue to use it because it's my hobby and it doesn't harm anyone.

As for your rationale that all P2P is bad, it's not. Just ask the people that I make relaxation CDs for. I give it away free of charge and they love me. I'm not out for money.

and you think they can't find a vpn??? I had a game server box setting it up connected to my network and got a letter from them. I had to explain that they would see this from time to time as I buy more servers. LOL and webspace is at a altime low on price I get 1000gb of transfer for only 199.99 come on thats cheep my god I have 35 game servers running and don't touch that.
