Where have the horizontal tabs gone, dammit!

If you prefer horizontal navigation in general then go to
Members -> Forum Prefs -> Style Preferences -> Navigation
and change to HORIZONTAL and hit save

Otherwise you are in the vertical world, which is the default for the site and for logged out users.

Horizontal navigation is still being tweaked but it works well enough to be used, and gives the pages more usable width.

Of course I am interested in any browser specific issues with it.

It feels weird viewing the site with horizontal tabs. Weird but cool

edit@ Forums link inactive though (when in Security forum)

and »/profile/u/917630 link doesn't work
»/postlist/917630?ticker=0 among other places

I'm using IE 6 fully patched. When I tried using the horizontal navigation it blew my margins out and I had to scrowl sideways. So I'm back to the vertical world.

I've been thinking that the blown out margins may have to do with me using 800x600 resolution. So I tried it at work where I have to use 1024x768 and large font. It still blew the margins out.

well you can tell whether the tabs are blowing the margin or not - are the running off the end for the longer categories? I get about 72 characters of tabs displayed on a browser that is about 800 or 900 pixels wide.

Forums link is inactive in a forum because the "forum links" are already selected and displayed in the next row. So there is nothing that "forum links" has to do..

I'm not sure what you mean for the /profile link etc. Those pages don't have any 2nd row of tabs for the same reason that no menu is open or highlighted in vertical nav, when you visit those pages.

When i click on Forums (half way along the page) at the top it takes me to »/forums/all except in Security forum

Should clicking on My.. take me to that page (/profile link) anyway?

edit@ it is there on every page and looks like a link

Ugh.... A change for the worse in my opinion. I liked having some options available in the top tabs when in my favorite forums. Now it is all top horizontal tabs or all vertical menus.

A change that will be VERY hard to get used to.

So I think the little nav buttons might be redundant at the top of the page, but could be kept at the bottom, where they save a scroll/home.

I don't think they are redundant unless you happen to be ON the My.. menu

Essentially I figure at least 3 of them are the most frequently used buttons on the site for members: posts, instant messages and topics. At least that is the case for me - Perhaps buddies can go though.

And the other issue is I still use them, so maybe just leave 'em.

By the way, the file attachment toggle is broken in Safari, probably during the other javascript additions. I can file a separate bug for that if you want.

It works for my safari test user. Please file a different topic if you have a problem with it.

Also had problems with margins (and having to scroll) , but also use 800X600 monitor like Sash which most people wouldn't use.

I rather like this feature. Looks cleaner. Not quiet used to the tabs but that's minor.

Justin, here's a picture of my Favorites showing the margin problem.

The problem seems to be the tabs on the row with the icons. Inside a thread only the first row of links show without causing margins to be blown out.

Also if it makes a difference my monitor is 17 inches and I use the normal 96 DPI.

yes I don't recommend the horizontal view for smaller monitors or bigger font sizes.

That is what I was thinking also. I'm back to verticle both at home and work which is okay with me.

IE6 default font size @ 1024x768

Works great. It will take sometime to get used to, but I'm up for change.

EDIT: The news section is acting up again. It was fine for a while. It's just running into the other column.

Also, would it be possible to remove the mouseover effect (ie. underline and/or URL hand) on the navigation bar in Horizontal mode. You can click beside it without hitting the word and it will still proceed to the desired destination.

Gotta say that the default "vertical world" now looks much cleaner, especially on the /forums/all listing and /postlist.

Thanks!
