And it's happening again now currently because of the recent outbreak of the Sober virus. Let's hope the SOBs figure it out soon and work so each others email go through. |

According to Hotmail, everything is fine: »support.msn.com/networkstatusres···ocId=460
The mail is being rejected at the time of entry, not being bounced by hotmail. See my earlier post in this thread.

| I agree, the problem is Comcast.
Plus, if Hotmail was hit by a virus (read: infected and not just a standard, cliched DOS/filter attack), why hasn't the news picked up on this? You know how it's the popular thing to bash MS nowadays.
According to Comcast's SMTP servers, my dedicated server doesn't exist and fails immediately. However, every other service and non-Comcast friend I have can send mail to my server perfectly.
Way to go Comcast, sluff it off on the easy target! |

From what's being said so far, Microsoft is saying there are problems on their end. However the 550 error does seem suspicious, will have to check in on this one... I wouldn't put the blame onto Comcast yet, as Microsoft seems to think the problem is theirs. |

| said by Morty :Ummmm.... no. It's Microsoft, they've acknowledged the problem and told Comcast they'll work on getting it fixed. Comcast isn't doing anything about it with the exception of keeping Microsoft on top if it to get it resolved (as there is nothing for Comcast to do). Ummm, no, it's Comcast. You can test it for yourself.

And no, Microsoft hasn't acknowledged the problem. (Why would they, it's clearly not their problem at all.)

I don't think Comcast is out to screw anybody, but I do think that perhaps nobody is working on this problem since Tech Support has determined that this is a Hotmail problem -- and it's not. -- Robb Topolski -= funchords.com =- Hillsboro, Oregon USA ~ Keeper of the D-Link FAQ ~ Did you Search? ~ More features, Free! | I don't think Tech support has determined anything, they never do. I withdrew my comments upon reviewing more of the information contained within the thread, Microsoft from my understanding has acknowledge the problem in E-Mail to Comcast. This could get interesting, the 550, 551 error would seem to be coming from the Comcast side, but at the same time, Microsoft seems to be acknowledging problems from theirs as well. |

| The 550 error is coming from Comcast. In SMTP-speak, a 550 means "Permission Denied, don't try that again." It is created by a policy or a rule.
If it was a Microsoft problem, and Comcast was just preventing a large backlog from occuring, they should use code 450 "temporarily busy, try later" or 452 "disk full, try later."
But even if, what they really should do is accept the mail and then give the sender a Delivery Status Notification (DSN) that the message was not delivered and it will keep trying for xxx days.
Personally, I don't think that Microsoft even knows about this. The worlds largest ISP can't send mail to the worlds largest mailhost? Funny that it wouldn't be up on their status board. -- Robb Topolski -= funchords.com =- Hillsboro, Oregon USA ~ Keeper of the D-Link FAQ ~ Did you Search? ~ More features, Free! Join BBR! ~ |

I am a Comcast HSI subscriber and I received a notification from webmaster@AOL on Monday:
--- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message INFECTED: \mail.zip#3246972437 (Win32:Sober-AB2 [Wrm]) was deleted from the message.
Virus Database (VPS): 0547-5, 11/26/2005 Tested on: 11/28/2005 10:48:21 PM avast! - copyright (c) 1988-2005 ALWIL Software. »www.avast.com
I did a scan on my machine and find no virus. I am up to date with Trend Micro PC-cillin.
There was no way to identify the message in question and I thought this might be spam.
Now I get the port denied message when emailing my son's hotmail account.

This is a microsoft issue. When and if it comes out, you all will be eating your words.

| reply to rwilcox I am able to receive mail from my Hotmail acccount to my comcast account, but am unable to send mail to my or other's Hotmail accounts. I am also getting the 550 error message.
This has been going on since at least yesterday.
It sucks that two giant companies like Comcast and Microsoft have not yet worked the problem out.
One more reason to dump Comcast (other than their horrid Comcast Local Edition, that pops up twice hourly on CNN). |

I wouldn't put the blame onto Comcast yet, as Microsoft seems to think the problem is theirs. If it was on the MSN Hotmail end, your Comcast message submission server would accept email without error, but your Comcast output MTA would return a Delivery Failure Notice to your account, with a diagnostic message explaining the error.
Alas, what I have seen, and what others report seeing, is a hard error at the Comcast message submission server; the Comcast server doesn't seem to like @hotmail addresses in the messages. It is refusing to even accept them for delivery. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

I agree- mail is not leaving my outbox.
Here is the (undated) comcast posting on this issue: »www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.j···il118361
but curiously I can't find an equivalent on the MS side. Suggests MS doesn't perceive a problem. |

As of 12/1 not being able to send mail to hotmail users via Comcast remains an issue. |

said by Sistressk :
Well it's December and i just got the same message. it happens with aol as well Are those messages Delivery Failure Notices from the Comcast MTA, or refusal to accept email by the Comcast message submission server?
In the first case, you receive an email from <MAILER-DAEMON@comcast.net> advising you that the email could not be delivered; typically including a diagnostic message describing the reason for the failure.
In the second case, your mail client pops up an error window telling you that your server is not accepting the email.
A DFN is, usually, related to a problem, or policy at the destination. A pop up is always a problem with your local server, or network connection. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

3 edits | Norman I just tried to send through my Comcast account. I tried to send a message to my Hotmail acct, and Yahoo, Bigfoot and MyRealBox all at the same time. Upon send I immediately got this message:
"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'my email@hotmail.com'. Subject 'Testing email delivery', Account: 'Comcast Mail (my acct name)', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 permit denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79"
This error in OE is: 0x800CCC79 SMTP REJECTED RECIPIENTS - Server rejected recipients
The message remained in my outbox. If I delete the hotmail recipient addy the message is delivered. |
