| [General] Free VOIP West Coast DID, 100 min/month free
FW is killing this company right now, but the deal is legit and I figured the folks here probably deserve it more (I know that is a stereotype).
www.callpacket.com
No credit card required for the free plan which includes 100 minutes per month and a west coast DID. They list the PAP2 as officially supported for BYOD.
Can't decide if it's better than VOIPbuster or not. I'll let everyone decide for themself.
I did a search here and I only found miniscule references to callpacket. -- $100 placed at 7 percent interest compounded quarterlyfor 200 years will increase to more than $100,000,000 --by which time it will be worth nothing.- Lazarus Long |

I had thought about posting Callpacket on this forum too as there was little mention of it so far. I started the thread over on FW and I thought it would be better to let this little company catch up for a while from the FW effect. I don't post very much in this forum as it seems to have succumbed to little more than a place to complain about service issues. I do hope callpacket makes it as they have a nice little package and one can't beat the price;) |

It would at least help the company survive the effect without discontinuing the deal altogether.
I know there can be some complainers here, but you've got to admit that FW has its fair share of lurkers that will sign up for 20 accounts and rotate their username/password every couple days. There are still some decent people who post here, but I guess we all have to sort through the garbage to read the good stuff.
Thanks for bringing the deal to my attention as I think it's worth checking out. -- $100 placed at 7 percent interest compounded quarterlyfor 200 years will increase to more than $100,000,000 --by which time it will be worth nothing.- Lazarus Long |

I speak in the sense that I would hardly use a second line in almost any scenario, but this one gives you a US based DID. I agree with you, it's like comparing apples and oranges, but they are both fruit and one is cheaper than the other depending on where you are and what time of year it is.
I guess it would have been better to say that there is not much of a comparison, but they are both free (sort of). -- $100 placed at 7 percent interest compounded quarterlyfor 200 years will increase to more than $100,000,000 --by which time it will be worth nothing.- Lazarus Long |

CP and VB is actually the combination I'm using now on my 2-line Linksys PAP2. |

I was thinking this sounded like a good deal UNTIL I saw on their FAQ that they wanted my MAC address (and for me to point my ATA to their tftp server), so that they could "push" settings to my adapter. Ouch!
Do you happen to know if you actually get the SIP credentials from this company (so that you can manually setup your ATA), or is this really BYOD support only for those that let this company remotely control their adapters?
I personally think it is a VERY BAD IDEA to let any BYOD company remotely configure my adapter! Not only are they likely to muck up my other adapter settings, but any company with "remote control" of your adapter can actually LOCK YOUR OWN ADAPTER. Now a reputable company might not lock down a BYOD adapter (when they remotely configure it for you), but what's to stop them if/when you give them remote control?!?
And this company does seem to want the remote control of BYOD adapters. Do they give you the SIP credentials so you can do your own config, or is this really BYOD only allowed if/when you give them totally remote control (including the ability to remotely "lock your adapter" if/when they choose to) of your own SIP adapter? |

| You can configure your device manually. If you're using a linksys adapter: Line1: Proxy: voip.callpacket.com Using Outbound Proxy: yes Outbound Proxy: voip.callpacket.com Display Name: xxx User ID: cpxxxxx Password: xxxxx
Regional: Remove Call Back Deact Code: *86, this way you could use *86 to check your VM
if you behind NAT, just enable the NAT setting.
I am not at home now but I believe I configured my sipura the same way. Good luck

| reply to DracoFelis When I log in, they supply the SIP credentials where you could also choose to have them push the configuration. I personally have no intention of using that feature.
My credentials don't work on my DTA-310 (w/ AR160), but many people are reporting success with the PAP2 over in FW. I plan on setting up my PAP2 when I get home. People in FW are reporting success without having to make any changes to their configuration, just plugging in proxy, user, and password. -- $100 placed at 7 percent interest compounded quarterlyfor 200 years will increase to more than $100,000,000 --by which time it will be worth nothing.- Lazarus Long |

Any luck setting up this service with asterisk? I got outbound working but no inbound so far. |

The free DIDs are not just west coast. It looks like there are area codes from all over the US.
Free is free. You can't beat that price. |

Use 67.43.159.38 instead of voip.callpacket.com for better service. I had this free service since early September using my sipura 1001. It worked perfect. I didn't use outbound proxy, and the preferred codec is G729a. And you don't need provide MAC address and just use the general configration, it worked for me. |

| fife: Use their 'live online support person' link, there actually is a helpful person [or a REALLY INTELLIGENT robot] there! I bugged him/her, and got my number straightaway!
But I've noticed in the past few days the most popular area codes are GONE. We're talking podunk (mostly Red-State Redneck Hell) in the DID inventory now. Usual economics of giving stuff away! |
