Cool!
But for international calling Voipbuster is much better. For 1 Euro ($1.30 I believe) you get unlimited calling to most of Europe.... You try the service out with unlimited 1 minute calls to most of Europe for free, but you don't get a phone number for people to call you!
Though this is cool that all these free phone deals are popping up again! Just like the good old days!

I note some of the int'l rates are very low, too low to be sustainable, e.g. 1 cent for italy and spain, 2 cents for mexico.

| My line 1 is a 100 minute plan from Broadvoice with a local area code for $5 a month. My intention is to use callpacket free minutes on line 2 when I run out of Broadvoice time. I have a single line phone. Can I still receive incoming calls from line 1 if I am making outgoing calls on line 2 without constantly switching the cord to the jack? |

Just got my number in 818 area code (have no idea where is that). It took 12 hours for them to process order. Also they probably called my signature number from SR to verify that I'm real person. And that's what probably takes most of their time. I'm still kind of confused about the company though. Their support forum do not have any messages at all. It usually means.
1. Forum is not working 2. There are no customers 3. Forum has been just launched 4. There are no issues with service and hence no postings
I'm trying to make softphone work via HTTP proxy and it does not allow me so I created helpdesk ticket with them. Will check how good are they in handling tech support issues (hope nothing like SR). -- FIOS availability maps http://www.emailconfirm.com/fiosmaps/ |

818 is Los Angeles.
They never called to confirm I'm a real person... |

3 edits | Last night all the area codes I wanted were gone. Now, in the morning, they are there. I sent an email to customer service and got back a note that they are processing, but you can login with the email and password you gave them to look at the site. |

Try registering, it gives an error that you did not type in the correct confirmation code, but there is no where to type one in nor is one displayed.

| I just talked to someone on their live chat, he said quote: We are in the process of alloting the account You will receive the welcome letter in next 1 or 2 hours
And that is all he said. I guess I will wait and see. |

I registered with CallPacket, received two confirmation emails and my number, but no live call as of yet. I imagine they are swamped especially with FatWallet.com involved.
I've downloaded the CallPacket software but haven't tried makng a call yet.
Speaking of FatWallet, someone over at the FatWallet forum by the username of "heiNey" appears to be representing CallPacket and answering questions.

| reply to gatzdon I did not receive an email from CallPacket with the assigned phone number in it. But about an hour after signing up I logged in to my account page. The number was there already.
I have made and received about two hours of calls with a soft phone (not CallPacket's) in the last week. No problems with the service at all so far. -- FWD 50775 |

| reply to gatzdon Anyone know what happens with the free service when you use up all your 100 outgoing minutes: is the service cut off or is there an option to pay by the minute?
I use Teliax for outgoing calls. But with CallPacket's call forwarding enabled to a cell phone, outgoing minutes could start to add up. -- FWD 50775 |

In FW, a callpacket employee reported that when you use up your 100 minutes, you can't make any calls until the next month (in other words, you can't just pay x¢/min to keep making calls), I imagine this is an incentive to get you to upgrade to a pay plan. -- $100 placed at 7 percent interest compounded quarterlyfor 200 years will increase to more than $100,000,000 --by which time it will be worth nothing.- Lazarus Long |

| reply to gatzdon This company is a total joke.
I signed up this morning, got an instant e-mail back telling me my account would be activated. 3 hours later, nothing. I used their instant chat to talk to "Raymod".
With MUCH delay in his response (and poor spelling or poor typing to further annoy me), he eventually revealed that "these codes aren't available". Five more agonizing minutes of "instant chat with tech support" revealed that even though the site LET me choose a certain area code for my phone #, this area code is not available.
Could Raymond help me? You guessed it: of course not. I had to "sign up with different account". He eventually allowed me to deduce that this meant I had to use a different e-mail account to sign up again.
Back to signing up again. Guess what? Now, no matter WHAT area code I select, it tells me it's not available.
What a joke. Or a scam. I don't know which. |

Wow, a company gets hammered by the FW effect (wait until it hits SD) and you get pissed because they couldn't give you a free VOIP account immediately. Let me ask you, how much did they charge you so far. I bet you are the same person who gets pissed because you show up at Office Max on Saturday to find out they ran out of all the Free after Rebate stuff.
By all accounts, this company has offered a great promotion and is doing a pretty good job honoring it. At FW, the post has gotten over 10,000 hits (all within the last 24 hours) and the employees are answering all questions. I imagine their servers are getting hit with all those people setting up and testing their equipment simultaneously. -- $100 placed at 7 percent interest compounded quarterlyfor 200 years will increase to more than $100,000,000 --by which time it will be worth nothing.- Lazarus Long |
