Thanks MagMan.

This should probably be moved to software though.

Flock is build on the same core as Firefox. I'd say it works here.

Nothing to be sorry about it at all. I am just looking down the road as each browser has their own little part of the Forum. Opera, Mozilla, Netscape, IE.

Downlow,

I took this quote from their FAQs here:

quote:
Flock FAQs; but our plan is for the vast majority if not all of our code to be open source for the foreseeable future.
and from this blog:

quote:
So here’s the plan: we’re going to experiment and innovate. We plan to make a ton of mistakes, listen to our users, focus on building the best product that meets our users’ needs.

Where there are obvious, proven, opportunities to generate revenues in ways that respect our users’ privacy and don’t hinder the user experience, we will pursue those. But we firmly believe that doing right by our users is the best way to build a sustainable, successful company, so expect us to focus pretty much all of our energy on innovating the web browser experience and earning your trust.
IMO something does not seem right with their thoughts on user data and how they are going to get sponsers. It also sounds like any code they come up with seperate from Fx/Netscape will be liscened by them then become availble to anyone that wants it for a fee.

I would ask if any money must be paid to "Flock" for extensions or themes that have to change code that "Flock" owns?

Seems totally profit driven to me. Nothing wrong with that but their site is so vague that it smacks of hiding something.

I think I will stick with Fx and Opera.

I tried it for a bit, doesn't really strike me as any sort of improvement. It enables me to more easily do things that I never wanted to do in the first place, but while it's doing that it makes it very difficult to import my Firefox bookmarks. But I was offered the option to import my IE bookmarks on installation. To me there's something very wrong about that. I'm glad that it enables folks to more easily switch from IE, but why so hard to import bookmarks from any other browser?

So far two thumbs down from me, but I'll keep watching.

Despite all of the cool stuff we have added, there are still plenty of things that we did not yet get to. So, with a promise to tackle these ASAP, here is a list of some of the things that currently don't work:

* Flock still doesn't import your Firefox or IE favorites
* Flock does support Flash, but other plug-ins have NOT been tested
* While we have ten or so of the most popular Firefox extensions working, we need to come up a way to make most Firefox extensions working in Flock and/or cajole extension authors to make their extensions work with Flock
* A weird timestamp/debug window shows up when you publish a blog post. We're on the case. But your post will get published just fine
* Firefox themes do not work with Flock
* Choice! We like it as much as you do, but we must crawl before we can walk. While we support a number of blogging platforms, we don't yet offer a choice of social bookmark services or photo sharing services
* Blogging platforms: WordPress and Blogger work pretty well. There are some problems still with Movable Type. We haven't tested any other blogging platforms
* Bad things happen if you say "Yes, share my bookmarks" and then don't enter del.icio.us account info

Finally, there is a list of several hundred bug reports and ideas for feature improvements, including some bugs that will make your browser crash. So consider this software experimental, and be prepared for crashes and occasional data losses. We do not recommend that you use Flock 0.5 as your main web browser.

well, its always good to have new ideas and experiment, I am just unsure/clear of what Flock really wants to do.

I guess I will watch this space for future developments.

ps: well, thanks to all this talk, I just tried the preview of Opera...interesting, seems to run better on my old POS work machine than MooxM1 build of FF does.

Still kinda of odd interface/usability, but I seemed to figure out most of it (pop-up control is non-existent and inability to move some things around is annoying, although I like the ability to scale up/down the buttons)...again, another interesting new toy, but for now, I am sticking with FF.

Yeah Im not quite sure what all the hype is about the Flock browser.

I would much rather use K-Meleon over this one. I think I will wait a bit to see where this goes before trying it out.

Just downloaded it. I can't really see anything special about it. No mouse gestures, doesn't use MDI, kind of useless, atleast for me. It really lacks so much, I'll wait until it starts to improve over time.

wordpress the site isn't all that interesting for the most part. their blogging software (available at wordpress.org) is another story altogether, looking to me a mighty fine and extensible alternative to Movable Type.
