| [Info] What to expect from Beta firmware...
Hi guys ...
I'm not a D-Link guy and obviously can't speak for them...
But one of the things that many of us D-Link afficionados have enjoyed is the occasional "beta" (i.e. pre-release) versions of firmware.
These aren't "official" external releases, to be sure. They are discovered on various sites, shared 1-to-1 by engineers or support people, perhaps even intentionally leaked ... and somehow wind up here.
D-Link has never publically objected to their pre-release code appearing here -- so far. Let's face it -- we're free testers. But if we continue to berate the company for bugs in pre-release code, I expect that sooner or later, D-Link is going to contact BBR and start asking for removal of code or links to code. That would be bad!
So let's lighten up on the rhetoric when it pertains to unreleased code. There are solid and stable versions, and not all problems are firmware related. If a beta version solves a particular problem or need -- fine, it doesn't expire. But if it doesn't, we at least had the chance to try it out. -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA ... | I've seen as many people berate D-Link over problems in the release firmware as in the beta firmware. It's good that they are at least trying to fix the problems but some people like myself get fairly frustrated by being unable to stop random reboots (or whatever issue other people are getting bothered by). I was reading through the 2.70 and 2.71beta threads last night because all of a sudden after being fairly stable (as in only like one to three reboots per day on average) my DI-624 decided to reboot at least 5-6 times in a ten minute period. That is certainly not acceptable performance. I feel stupid for not remembering to touch the router and see if heat was an issue at the time but I do know that later in the night when I checked it the router was merely warm - not hot at all. I'm currently still using the 2.42 firmware because of all the people here at BBR that complained about reboots with newer versions that led me to believe 2.42 would be more stable. So far I have had NO complaints with the DI-624 other than the reboots and a problem connecting to my dad's work laptop that we got around by using the wireless card we already had. So for me if they can figure out a way to fix that one main issue of the rebooting with firmware then I'll be happy. After the horror of last night I have gone about 14 hours without a reboot - which I'm ashamed to say is nice considering how much I expect it to happen with this router. I do agree that some of the language in D-Link threads here has been too negative or over the top. Especially when other users are just trying to help and someone gives up while trashing the product and leaves with the usual, "I'll never buy a D-Link product again blah blah" that I'm sure you've seen many times. Even if we tone down some of the comments though I still think it's beneficial to other users to be able to see that they aren't alone in their frustration. |

I want to add, Reboot is not that bad. I try few different brand router from my work, like SMC, Linksys, GigaFast, Inexq..... Some of them after heavy use, they don't reboot itsef, just stand still....!! I then need to walk to the router & press the "reset" button before I can use those again! I think it's even worst.
