DMA is not working

I have an Asus A8V Deluxe,
Running Bios 1013beta

I have a recently purchased Hitachi 400 gig Pata hard drive.
It will only run in PIO mode.

A different hard drive on the same controller previously ran using DMA, no problems.

I checked in Windows, Use DMA if available is checked.
Current state is PIO mode.

I checked in the Bios, DMA is enabled.
I used the Hitachi DFT, No problems with either the slow or fast test.
I used the Hitachi drive settings tool, to check that DMA is enabled on the drive itself.

Is there anything else I am missing?

Are you using the 80 conducter cable?

Yes. I am using the same cable that worked no problem with the old drive.

I appreciate the thought!

I had the same problem with an old western digital 60 gig.

It would not run in DMA mode only in PIO. BUT when I put it in a different computer it did run in DMA.

I have no clue. On that comp, tried formatting, removing IDE drivers, nothing. Always ran in PIO no matter what.

what you can try is setting the PIO mode in the bios to 0 in stead of auto and see if that will help.

It's an easy fix as if it works.

I still have that computer with the same problem and I have never found a way to fix it.

Other drives will run DMA on it, just that one on that computer. It's maddening

I will check those items recently suggested, I won't have a chance for a few days.

I will report back when I have the results.

Reporting back...

I tried deleting and re-detecting the IDE controller, it worked in multi-word 2 DMA for a while after that. Still slow...

I updated my VIA chipset drivers, rebooted, still slow.

Did nothing for about 5days, suddenly it works great (compared to before), about 45 MB/s. The drive is about 50% full, so I can tolerate that...

If it stays this way, I will be happy. I just don't know if I really trust the drive though...

Once a hard drive gets stuck into the PIO mode or turned down windows will not turn it back up. So deleting the controller or editing the registry would do the trick. Each hardware setup the place in the registry is different, but once you find it not hard to remember. You could just search for masteriddatachecksum entry and delete it then restart the computer.
