I make long calls to india and am trying to find a cheaper or a free solution.
Not specifically what you are asking for. However, if the family in India can get (or already has) Broadband internet, you could both sign up for a free VoIP service (such as "Free World Dialup").

If you did that (both of you using free VoIP), all calls between you and them (calling in either direction, for as long as you wanted to talk) would be totally free (beyond any charges your ISP may charge you for your internet bandwidth). About the only "down side" of this approach, is that BOTH SIDES (you, and the people in India) need BroadBand internet.

NOTE: You can do this with a computer program ("softphone") if you like. However if you are willing to spend at least $60 per side (I'm personally fond of the SPA-3000, which is around $100 each from Voxilla.com), you could buy a "hardware adapter", and then do VoIP with real phones (just as if you signed up with a commercial VoIP company). While the adapter costs might sound like a lot (especially with some VoIP companies "giving you" an adapter "for free"), keep in mind that this is a "one time cost" (buy your own adapter, and you own it)!

But once you set this up (with either a free "softphone" for your computer, or a hardware VoIP adapter), the only "monthly cost" is your monthly ISP charges. i.e there are no VoIP charges to use free VoIP services! And as long as long as both sides of the call are on the free VoIP services, even international calls between them are "free" (for as long as you want to talk)!

FWIW: I recently took advantage of this sort of "pure VoIP" (i.e. VoIP that never touches the telco network on either end), by having a conference call with the Australians that started the free "SIP Broker" VoIP proxy. And despite the fact that we talked about 2 hours internationally, the call was totally free for everyone participating (since all of us where using free VoIP services)...

Isn't VoIP fun!
