said by devivo30 :If I connect the NIC of my computer directly to the 6100, I can connect to the internet from that PC. In this configuration, is Windows doing PPPoE for you? If not, you're on DHCP and the Verizon guide is of no use to you. Use this instead: »members.verizon.net/~res08lyg/6100.htm It's for putting the 6100 in bridge mode for DHCP and includes a way to work around the MAC filtering/binding. |

I wish I could buy you a beer! That worked perfectly. As soon as I saw the phrase MAC Address cloning, the lightbulb went off. I put the 6100's mac addy in the router, and it was able to get an IP from Verizon's DHCP server, and everything is working now!
WOW! I should have posted my question sooner. But I thought my problem was too esoteric... obviously not.
Thank You, thank you, thank you...

| reply to darcilicious paradisecowgirl, that's a great resource, thanx. but it's for those on dhcp, NOT pppoe, and i thouht illinois was pppoe? wouldn't putting the modem into bridge mode and letting the router do pppoe, just as with the 2200, be the right approach here (no cloning)? or is there something different with the 6100? some of us have been directing 6100 users to the 2200 FAQ on putting it into bridge mode, but maybe that's wrong...? -- graciella! | Gracie -- I am in Illinois (Central IL, between Bloomington-Normal and Champaign-Urbana.) My Verizon DSL is using DHCP not PPPoE. When I did the WAN auto-detect from the Westell 6100, it responded that a DHCP server was found and a PPPoE server was not found. Also, when I followed the guide that paradisecowgirl posted for putting the 6100 into bridge mode and using DHCP on the router, it worked like a champ. Finally, nowhere on the PC, the modem or the router was I asked to put in my Verizon username/password, which further leads me believe that this is DHCP, not PPPoE.
This is a brand new Verizon DSL account. I just reached my activation date last week. Also, DSL has just recently become available in my area (within the past month or two.) So, if it's Verizon's strategy to switch from PPPoE to DHCP, that might explain it.
By the way, I'm in Le Roy Illinois, not Decatur. We recently moved. In Decatur, I had SBC DSL. Here in Le Roy, Verizon is the telco.

| said by gracie :ah! and i thought the only accounts not using pppoe were in the west. thanx for the clarification! For the most part, exGTE areas (which are not just in "the west") are DHCP. There are, however, a few pockets of PPPoE deployments when Verizon had thought they would switch everyone over to PPPoE -- that plan only lived long enough to confuse everyone
(Also, I only suggested the DHCP guide after asking if his computer was doing PPPoE for him when no router was in the mix). |
