[Wireless] WRT54G v5 - hard to access T-Mobile website

I recently bought a WRT54G v5 and hooked it up to my computer and DSL modem. The computer is wired into the router and I use the wireless for a Wi-fi enabled phone. It seems to work OK, I can generally access the internet, but I'm having a couple of problems:

1. My computer won't download the www.t-mobile.com website. It seems to connect, but the screen stays blank, and then after several minutes the webpage gradually starts to load, but many images don't. This is the only site where this happens to me, all the others I use seem to work OK. To make sure the site wasn't having problems, I removed the router and connected my computer directly to the DSL modem, and the site worked fine. So does anyone know if there is something on this website that conflicts with the router, or if the router is preventing traffic that would normally go to my computer? I am using the Sygate firewall both with and without the router.

2. with many sites, I often notice a 2-4 second delay between clicking on a link and connecting to the site - its not a major thing, just an annoyance, but it only started after I hooked up the router - is that typical for using this router (one of the wired ports), does the switching generally cause this much of a delay?

3. Sometimes, my phone can't find the wireless connection, even though I am sitting in the same room with the router and not more than 5-6 feet away from it. It just doesn't show up on the list of available connections. The phone doesn't seem to have this problem with other hotspots, so I assume the router stops broadcasting the signal for short intervals. Sometimes the connection gets lost in the middle of downloading a webpage too. Any settings I could change that might fix this?

If you bought v.5 recently and can exchange easily go for it. The v.5 router is a brand new product in terms of software for Linksys so it would have its share of problems for a while. The additional disadvanage is that it has less memory so you would not get third party software (to use or troubleshoot a problem).

#1:
Check if pings to t-mobile getting through consistently. The command is ping -t www.t-mobile.com .

Check that MTU and RWIN set properly for DSL line. Start with MTU=1492 (or 1460) and RWIN in 20000 to 50000. It is possible (but not very likely) that these settings cause problems for a connection to t-mobile.

#2:
A router does not add noticeable delay in web connectivity if everything is working the way it is supposed to. Something is amiss. I saw something like this at my friends house. A few of his PCs had viruses that were trying to search for other machines to infect and killing a router with super high volume of connection requests. I had not realized that viruses create so much network traffic.

I am not saying that it is the case for you but something to check. See if you see something unusual in the router's log.

3. It is possible that your router reboots when you loose a connection. Note lights on the front when your connection drops.

Once again you would have many more options if you get prior generations of WRT54G and most stores still have them in stock.

Thanks for the suggestions. This T-mobile website problem is curious. I tried the ping as you suggested, and that goes through just fine. I tried adjusting the MTU and the RWIN, but that didn't make any difference. Then I tried putting my computer's IP address into the router's DMZ, thinking that would expose it to all the traffic the router is getting, which should be the same as the computer without the router (shouldn't it?), but the problem still happened. Then on the router's security page, I tried unblocking the Anonymous Internet Request, but the problem still happened. It is very frustrating.

Then I discovered this today: I tried using my AOL program and its browser, still behind the router, and it downloaded the T-mobile website just fine. So I went back to the Internet Explorer browser and tried it again, and I couldn't download the site. I'm using Verizon DSL as my ISP in both cases, so I don't understand why the AOL browser works on this website and the IE doesn't, when both are behind the router, and both work fine when I'm not using the router.

It's not a big problem anymore because I can access the site now, but I'm curious about what's going on? Any ideas?

I think your problem with t-mobile is related to the incredible amount of JavaScript code that t-mobile.com has. Probably some security setting in IE does not handle some of this code. Look at bottom left corner of IE if there is a yellow triangle with exclamation point (IE way of indicating JavaScript and VBScript errors)

Many people here would suggest to use Firefox instead of IE for many, many reasons. One of them is ability to troubleshoot some web site by using a different browser. Overall Firefox is a better browser.

Sight loads just fine with IE6, WRT54Gv2 and Verizon here. I'd bet it is an IE configuration issue of some sort.

Could be. Curiously enough, I just tried the Firefox browser, and it won't download the T-mobile website from behind the router either, although it will if I don't use the router. Neither Firefox nor IE give me an error message, they just sit there like they are trying to download the page. In the lower left corner of IE is the message "opening page »www.t-mobile.com/...",and when I finally hit the X-button to stop the browser, the message changes to "opening page »www.t-mobile.com/masthead/css/ma···.css..." and this page will only stop trying to load if I go to a different website or close the browser.

The fact that both IE and Firefox will work without the router, but neither will with the router, makes me think the problem is in the router, not the browser. Anyway, its the first time for me that the AOL browser has ever been better at anything than both IE and Firefox!

You might have some web sites blocked in the router (Access Restrictions tab). Some people block DoubleClick and similar web sites to suppress ads. This creates problems once in a while.

It is possible that AOL browser is better for you because it does not implement some standard so it does not get "offending" code. If you look at t-mobile site JavaScript code you would see a lot of browser conditional code (for IE, Netscape and so on).

This really sounds like an MTU issue. Run the tweaktest tool here and post the results.

According to what you have posted, your MTU is 1492 with the router and 1400 without it. Configure your router for Manual MTU and set it at 1400 (here »192.168.1.1/ )and see what happens.

Also, there is a huge difference in your RWIN between the two, but deal with the MTU first.

OK here's what happens. When I change the router's MTU to 1400, IE still doesn't download the page. But now Firefox sometimes does and sometimes doesn't and sometimes only loads half the page. Again, though, as soon as I remove the router and connect the computer directly to the DSL modem, both browsers immediately work just fine on the page.

Just out of curiosity, i hooked the router back up and changed the MTU back to 1492, and now Firefox seems to download the almost the whole page just fine (it hangs with the hourglass after the page seems to have loaded, as though it is waiting for some last image or something; if I click on a link on the page, the next page only seems to load half-way.). IE though still won't work. It makes me wonder if there is something interaction between the router and java?

The RWIN difference is because I ran the Tweak test yesterday after the first response to my posting, and RWIN came out at 65535 and the Tweak test told me to use DRTCP to set it into a range of 7260 to 20328. So I did and set it to 20,000. Evidently that set the Router's RWIN to 20000. (I don't know much about RWIN - will the router and computer each have a setting for this, or is it set up with the PPPoE process? If both have one, do they have to be in sync somehow?)

I also just purchased a v5 and was unable to get to www.mbtrading.com. Tried changing MTU to no avail. Was lucky enough in returning the unit and found a V4 still on the shelf. Exchanged it and don't have the problem anymore.

i work for verizon voice wing and i have promblems with the fire wall setting for our voip service i think it is the firewall

I am having the same problem with this router and the T-Mobile site. I tried to get help from Linksys tech support and they were not able to resolve the issue. The funny thing is T-Mobile is the only site that I cannot access. I, too, can connect directly from my modem. The page loads partially when trying to connect thru Firefox. I also do not have a problem connecting to their UK site.

Funny i use WRT54G v5 firmware 1.00.2 and i can access »www.t-mobile.com/ and »www.mbtrading.com/ without any problems.

does this version of the firmware have a "statefull firewall".. these firewalls are supposed to be a little smarter than just simple NAT translation routers....maybe its too smart and since T-mobile has so many darn images and stuff on their front page the router is assuming you are getting an Denial of Service attack from the site... try turning off or tuning your "DOS" settings and see what happens...

very often I've seen very complex sites with lots of images set off Denial of Service detection algorithms... the solution was to lower the sensitivity if possible and if thats not possible just dissable the detection altogether. Only gamers who piss other gamers off get DOS attacked at home...

how about firewall? is that enabled or disabled? try disabling it and see if it lets you view t-mobile site..if you can they have wrapped DOS into this... maybe advanced setting???

Hey, BlackEyed - I've tried the 100.2 firmware and it doesn't make any difference for me. I was reading on another thread that Linksys admitted there were some problems with v5 and DSL, and that it worked better with cable modems. Any chance you are using cable? or a provider other than Verizon?

Otherwise, I've just accepted that the v5 router is a problem child, and am waiting until some new firmware comes out for it. The firewall doesn't make any difference on my system either.
