| [General] Nuivo vs. Packet8?
I currently have packet8 for about a year, No other VOIP has had a number in my area so P8 was the 1st. Recently I have found that Nuvio is available for my area. Seeing as I have never had any provider. It seems that for the extra 8 bux a month Nuvio might be a better service. Does Nuvio have incoming CID W/Name? anyone else care to speak up for/against Nuvio vs P8 in general. To switch or no?
Any replies appreciated. |

| If your P8 service is working well, you should keep it. If you're having problems, or the incoming caller ID with name is that important to you, then you will be delighted with Nuvio. Due to the codec used by Nuvio, you might find the calls sound a bit better than with P8. Should you decide to switch, PM me and I'll get you a signup link where you can get your first month free. |

| reply to OIOOIOIO I used to have P8 too...had them for a little over a year before I switched over to Nuvio.
Nuvio does have CID w/name, which was a huge plus. They also use a better codec, so the quality of the calls is better. They also have rock solid reliability, so you don't have to worry about if the call will go through or not (depending on your connection of course). The only thing you may miss that P8 has is the simultaneous ring feature that Nuvio doesn't have. But from my experience, you quickly forget about that after using them for a while.
Before you sign up, I think Rocky has some sort of promo thing where you get your first month free, or I could send you a referral, and that just gets you your second month free. Either way works. Feel free to ask any questions. |

| reply to OIOOIOIO I switched from P8 to Nuvio 7+ months ago. I agree with Rocky that if you aren't having problems with P8 stay there. I can't comment on P8's current service since my experience with them was so long ago but I personally haven't regretted moving to Nuvio. The phone just works and after a while you just forget that it's VoIP. well worth the couple extra dollars.
And hello to Nate and Rocky! Glad you boys are still around. |

| reply to OIOOIOIO I was in your same situation. I had started a couple of years ago w/P8. I switched about 6 months ago to Nuvio and have been extremely happy. The only thing that I found P8 does better than Nuvio is fax capability. While neither support it, I've found that P8 is about 75% successful and Nuvio is 5% successful. You'd think with a better codec you'd get better results, but for some reason that hasn't happened. I've had to switch back to P8 for faxing, but I'm sure as hell not giving up my Nuvio voice line.

I got a Linksys with my service. I signed up (via Rocky) a week ago...got my router in three days and was up and running in about 10 mins!
So far I am in love..LOL!

| reply to OIOOIOIO P8 seems like it gives out on me every other day or so. Probably not that much, but it seems that there always doing some system maintenance or something. I have a rock solid internet connection. Fax isn't important to me. The fact that I can never seem to get a human for P8 support is bugging the heck put of me though.
One of the things about Nuvio I couldn't find was a setup or startup fee, Anyone know what that is? incoming CID W/Name is somewhat important to me but not a deal breaker, Seeing the P8's CID doesn't seem to work very well for the last 6 months or so. the Simul Ring feature of Packet8 I have used once in the time I have been with them.
One of the main reasons that I might even consider staying with P8 is the upgrades that they are supposedly getting ready to do, I am hoping that they will fix what is broken maybe. Besides supposedly adding 7 digit dialing, CID W/ Name, And possibly a soft-phone feature that may or may not be handy. But then again I wouldn't be surprised if they raised there prices again and be equal price of nuvio.
Thanks for all your input everyone. |

| Nuvio does have an activation fee of $30 and a shipping fee of $10. I can send you a link for your first month free, which would take a nice bite out of the startup costs. Nuvio does have both incoming caller ID with name & 7 digit dialing ... but you have to program the area code for the 7 digit dialing to work in ... of course, I can help you with that... |

3 edits | reply to OIOOIOIO First, if I were you knowing that P8 is gettinge ready to introduce improvements in the next 30ish day's I'd hold of to at least see how well they work for you.
Nuvio is a great company that it seems to me is striving to meet their customer's needs. With them I hardly even notice that I have VoIP the quality is so great. Issues are few and far between and when problems arise they get them fixed quickly.
I feel they ARE worth a try if want to try them.
P.S.
You can also port your number from P8 to Nuvio! |

| I was in the middle of choosing P8 or Nuvio also. I chose P8 because they offered E911 service. They were the first at it and it works perfectly.
Some have said that they have had some problems using P8. I've only had it for about 5 weeks, but it has NEVER gone down on me. I can't say that I've been on the phone 24X7, but it has run perfect for me the entire 5 weeks.
P8 had waivered activation fees and modem expenses. Nuvio does charge for the activation and such. P8 on the other hand charges a disconnect fee if you cancel service in less than 1 year. Nuvio doesn't charge an activation fee. Both companies are well established and both use the same back bone.
All things being equal, I chose P8 for the E911 and the lower cost. I don't plan on disconnecting, so that expense is not a factor. P8 is cheaper each month by $5. E911 works perfectly. Nuvio and the others should be offering E911 shortly. P8 has free activation. I would say you would not be sorry if choosing P8. You would equally be happy with Nuvio. Later... Mike.... |

| reply to OIOOIOIO Thanks for all your replies, I have been with P8 for over a year, So there is no disconnect fee for me. Even Though, I think I will give them 30 or so days to see how the upgrading changes things. If it doesn't help things, Rocky Ill be sending you a PM.
One of the things I would like to know is how is Nuvio's DTA? |

My Motorola has been rock solid. Only once had their been a problem with it registering with Nuvio and a call to Tech Support quickly got things resolved. -- --P.B.Nuvio User's now have a place they can gather:»www.nuviovoiceforum.comResellers Welcome! |

| reply to OIOOIOIO I had P8 for a year, and then switched to Nuvio. While I was fairly pleased with P8, I've found Nuvio to be much better.
I'll say with Nuvio, in my experience call quality is better, service is more stable, overall the service is just better.
As for CID with name, it works pretty well. |

I've had P8 for almost a year, and other than the mini-meltdown 6+ months ago (April timeframe I believe), the service has been ROCK SOLID for me.
If you're truly experiencing frequent outages and are confident that your end's internet connectvity is solid (with minimal latency), you may want to send an IM to packet8SPT on here.
As far as voice quality goes, using unlocked Packet8 firmware (available in the threads here), you can enable G.711U for all calls. This results in a MAJOR IMPROVEMENT over the standard G.729 CODEC P8 otherwise forces on you. Unfortunately, the superior CODEC has minimal impact on the lag I sometimes experience w/ P8 calls.
