Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Wonder if this will fix the problem I had with WK.11 of frequent router rebooting? Dropped back to WK.7, and no more problems.

I think ZyWall2 is an excellent, very stable (virtually) bug free router
3.62 firmware went through 12 iterations and the release notes speaks for itself. I'm not saying there are no bugs in the firmware, but frankly as of now I'm not really aware of any know bug that can be replicated. The router is very stable, I'm personally running one with currently 3 months uptime (and the last reboot was due to power outage).

If you want to give it a try, upgrade to WK.12, reset to defaults after upgrade and reconfigure from scratch (don't restore any old config backup). If you'll experience reboots after that try to find out what might be causing it, post your setup and together we hopefully may be able to nail down the issue.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Thanks for the reply, Brano. I think I'll give it another go, this time with WK.12. I'm just a tiny bit reluctant, as the ZyWall2 has been up for 96 hours straight now, without a reboot. Before I upgraded to WK.11, I had something over 36 hours without a reboot. I installed WK.11 and the ZyWall2 would randomly reboot, sometimes it would go 8-10 hours, sometimes less than an hour.

I have a block of static IP's that I've assigned to various servers, (1 for FTP and webcam via port forwarding, 1 for Web server, 2 more for remote desktop connections)

When you say reset to defaults, are you doing this via the web configurator, or by pressing the reset button on the back. Either way, I can do it, just want to make sure one way is not preferable to the other.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Either way of resetting is ok. personally I use the button and reboot the PC at the same time.

OK, now running WK.12, let's see what happens. Seems to be faster, but I don't know why it would be.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Well, all was well until yesterday (Thursday) morning. I got up and saw the "network is now connected" notification, logged in to the router, and saw that my uptime was about 4 hours, which meant that the router rebooted at about 4:20AM. Exact same thing this morning, even the time is the same. I don't have a clue where to start looking on this one. I guess I need to set up some external logging, as the internal logs just don't go back far enough to tell anything.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Look at WallWatcher for a log capture/viewer program. Just what do you have running on the LAN all night that would make the internal logs NOT go back to around 4:00AM? So there are more then 128 incoming and out going requests between 4:00AM and when you get up (get up earlier)?? If so you can disable the Z2 from logging all incoming and outgoing connections and just log router messages.
Do you have the Z2 on a UPS? Could be the power is dropping?

Actually I used the Z2 for months without it ever rebooting, but not with this version firmware.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

I'll try to get Wallwatcher installed tonight and see what's going on.

I have a webcam set up in the backyard to watch the dogs, it runs 24x7, FTP server, just for convienence sake, and it runs 24x7, a web server to host pictures for a fraternal organization that I belong to, and two desktop computers that we leave on 24x7. The logs are full of blocked probes that appear to be trojans or backdoors, from the incoming port numbers and my little bit of research, also, someone is broadcasting netbios, which is also blocked. The logs fill up in about 1.5-2 hours normally. And no, I'm not getting up any earlier.(now you sound like my wife)

I don't think power surges or spikes are a problem, because nothing else goes off or resets. I don't have it on a UPS, but I do have it on a good surge protector. If need be I can pick up a UPS, but I just don't think power is the problem right now. It sits next to a Linksys WRT54G that is set up as a WAP, and it doesn't reset. There is also a Buffalo NAS server that will not restart on its own, and it hasn't been down either.

Oh well, I'll get to work on that logger tonight.

Thanks again, I'll let you know what I find.

10:30 AM, another reboot. Definately gotta get some external logging, every time it reboots it wipes out the logs.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Have you reset to defaults and reconfigured from scratch when upgrading to WK.12?

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Yep, reset, re-configured, had about a little better than 4 days straight uptime, then we started this. Oh well I need a project anyway

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Is the router rebooting or are you just losing your internet connect.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

If the router is rebooting then connect a serial terminal via RS323 to the router and turn on logging to file.
Every time router reboots there's a dump file that you need to capture and send to ZyXel.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Hmm, something new to learn. I have a serial cable, I believe, at home. Does this enable some other logging than, say, Wallwatcher or the like? Thanks again for all the help.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Use the serial cable that was included with your router.
Set the conn parameters to 8-N-1, turn on logging to file and let it be for day or two so you capture the dump during reboot.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

OK, I've hooked up the serial cable, and logged in. Looks just like the telnet screen. I need a hint on where to turn on logging to file. Is it from the CI, or is it a menu option that I've just missed. I'm really impressed with the flexibility of the ZyWall, but damn, the learning curve is tough.

Thanks again
Steve

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Depends whatever terminal you're using. Look in the menus. I prefer TeraTerm but HyperTerm must have some logging too.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Ok, I'm a bit confused here. Do I just connect via terminal, or do I log in, or connect , log in, and do something else?

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

Just connect so you get the login prompt and you can leave it there. The crash log will be dumped just to that window.

Re: ZyWall 2 - Firmware WK.12 released

OK, I'm there! It's set to capture the screen to file. Let's see what happens now. It's rebooted 4 time today. It will probably not reboot for days now that we're watching it, kinda like watching water boil.

Thanks again for your help, and I'll let you know what comes of it.

Steve

Edit: I spoke too soon, just rebooted...
