| Good OE Spam Filter?
Can anyone recommend a good (and preferably free) spam filter for Outlook Express?
My wife doesn't want to learn a new mail client (in spite of my urging) so I'd like to try out one or two that you experts recommend.
TIA! -- "Geez, I'm goin' crazy out there at the lake." |

| You could set up K9 for her. It supports auto-config for OE and seems quite good at spam-catching. I use it with Pegasus mail. -- Learn about Real ID and why it's so horrible. |

| reply to Babar Yes check out www.mail-block.com This is more then a filter, it's a robust service that will allow you to keep existing email accounts and stop all of the SPAM from coming into your email client. Additionally it is a email service so you have the option of checking your email when you are away from you home computer and there is "no spam". |

| reply to Babar SPAMPal might be worth a look.
It uses white and black lists as well as DNSBL lookups (DNSBL lookups block messages originating from domain names known for SPAMs).
There are also various plug-ins that provide more functionality such as converting HTML based e-mails to plain text, checking HTTP addresses in e-mails, etc. |

| reply to Babar I use K9 as well. I set it up to run in conjunction with Poptray. Since K9 stores copies of the filtered email. It's a good idea to make sure your AV checks the folder where K9 stores the good/spam files. The files are saved with the extension .kml so you may need to set up your AV to scan files of the type. |

1 edit | reply to Babar Popfile is the best by far.
»popfile.sourceforge.net/
Edited to say that a friend, who is the webmaster of the most popular website for modems, told me some time ago that Popfile can be trained to be 99.5% accurate as he trained it on the hundreds of emails he gets from readers of his site. I know others who use it and nothing equals it in accuracy. |

| reply to Babar Just use Pop-Peeper and save yourself the hassles of spam filtering. Check your mail on the server before downloading and delete the junk ahead of time. Check it out at:www.poppeeper.com -- Never argue with an idiot. They just bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. |

| reply to Babar I installed POPFile on my wife's machine. It requires some training, at first, to help it identify what you consider to be spam, but after that initial period it just works silently and in the background.
I configured it to modify the header of any message that it identifies as spam, and then created a filter in OE to put any message with the modified header into the Deleted mailbox. Jo manually inspects the deleted mailbox every day, just to be certain nothing is misidentified, and if she finds a message there that should not have been deleted, she calls me to come fix things up!
POPFile includes a whitelist capability (which it calls a magnet) and I've created magnets for her regular correspondents (our sons and a couple of ex-co-workers) but from time to time a valid message does get trapped out.
You can find it at »popfile.sourceforge.net/ and it's completely free... |

| reply to Babar I liked K9, after days of weeks of setting it up. I was running a secondary ISP's (email and limited dial-up hours per month) via SSL through SBC DSL. It was a pain to set up, and was working through a newsgroup -- had new internet friends sending screen shots and detailed procedures via email. I was able to get K9 talking through my SSL interface. After some point in time, I ended up deleting the spammed accounts (the main email account through that ISP was never spammed) and ended up with spam free email.
That said, I did love K9 and would recommend it. |

| reply to Babar Neither of my options would be free. Actually one of them was at one time. I've used Mailwasher - liked it - but it does require some interactivity in the beginning. I like my current choice much better. And think it would be easier to use for most people.
I'm currently using the antispam feature in ZASS ( ZoneAlarm Security Suite ) this is powered by MailFrontier. I'm very pleased with how it works. -- Test Your Security Cable Diagnostics My BLOG ZoneAlarm Help |

| reply to salzan I will wholeheartedly second the use of K9 and Poptray. Since integrating those 2 together, I have seen virtually zero spam in my mailbox. K9 identifies it and poptray deletes it. Only thing that comes to my inbox is legitimate mail that I WANT to see. If any legitimate email is wrongly tagged as spam, you just periodically open k9 (which stores the emails for a specified time, by you, scan and if a legit email is there, mark it as good. Next time K9 will allow it to pass as good. Nothing better then those 2 FREE softwares working together. If anyone needs help setting them up, I'll gladly lend a hand. -- What are you doing today, that will matter in 20 years? |
