Where to find freeware HTML Web Editors etc.

A while back I decided to learn enough HTML to build my own website. I spent a lot of time Googling. I hope this is useful to some posters here. These are free; but of course many are hoping for a donation or more often hoping you will buy the paid for version. Please remember although I have made a few comments you may say Tomāto and I may say Tomăto.

Also please post your own favorites.

First the basic ones,

Microsoft’s notepad of course, and PCWorld’s TextPad which adds a few features that will make coding HTML easier.

Now the others,

AceHTML Freeware One of my favorites. Tabbed for Editor and Viewer at the bottom and for most tags ( some JavaScript & CSS also) at the top of the page. Good help file and Tag reference list.

Coffee Cup Free HTML Editor WYSIWYG. One Chooses a theme (page background) and drags contents from from one column to another on the left and clicks on button’s on the right hand side to view, build, save, and send to the web.

EasyHtmlClick on the icons at the top of the page and it will bring up a wizard to fill out and then add the code when you are done with the wizard (& some JavaScript). It has help files.

1st Page 2000 Another one of my favorites. Extensive help files and also a “help with currant Tag”. It has four modes, Easy, Expert, Hardcore, and Normal . Also three tabs at the top, Edit, Preview, and Reference. All the tags (some Perl & JavaScript) can be found at the top and two frames at the left show where on your drive your files are and a list of the pages, etc.

HTML Kit I like it. Help pages are all on the net though.
Tabs to edit and view at the bottom and for tags (some JavaScript) at the top.

IMS Web Dwarf A WYSIWYG type. Column on left to page. I a, didn’t have time for it.

Nvu Open Source Web Editor.
They describe it so; “Finally! A complete Web Authoring System for Linux Desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver.
Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML.”
It is new as of June 05 and well worth a look

Site Aid Freeware I like it, simple and nicely done. It has tabs to get all the tags and also to edit, preview, or get help. A column on the left helps you bring up the pages stored on your hard drive.

Stone’s WebWriter Toolbar at the top brings up wizard windows to fill out and set up code needed. A tabbed column on the left enables you to find pages on your hard drive. One tab is tabbed again to show HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and some special characters. Viewer buttons on the top right.

Web-O-Rama Extensive help files on HTML 3.2, HTML4 and CSS. Icons at top bring up a wizard when filed out will install the code needed. A tabbed column on the left Will show you web files on your hard drive, Insert or View tags, and special characters. Brings up browser of your choice.

Two special ones.

Amaya from W3C Open Source. If you do not know what W3Cis take a look at it. You can browse the net with this one.

AOLPress

.

Other Stuff

Ace FTP 3 Freeware

CoffeeCup Free FTP

CoffeeCup Free DHTML Menu Builder

Buttonz and Tiles Two related programs.

btnMaker

Button Artist Wizard Old MS freeware.

Simple CSS — A Free CSS Authoring Tool

They explain it so;
"To help you work with CSS, we've created a free tool called Simple CSS, which runs on Macs, Windows and Linux. Simple CSS allows you to easily create Cascading Style Sheets from scratch, and/or modify existing ones, using a familiar point-and-click interface."

I do not know "...Jack..." about making a style sheet but my first try worked using this free program.

Get details here.

I still use AOLPress. Very nice WYSIWYG editor that doesn't mess-up existing HTML code.
