If you feel like heading up to Chi-town on Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving), you might be in luck for some price breaks. Last year, I saw something I thought I'd never see: Apple stores having sales on Macs. They might do it again and you only have a couple of weeks to wait. -- "Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. | reply to acadiel I just happen to be typing this on my 799 refurbished iBook I received today. Honestly besides the brown box I cannot tell why it is a refurb. Still had the plastic stuck to the top and bottom like the new ones (I know this because I had a new iBook 3 years ago). I would say it was more of an open box.
Same warranty as a new one, so you really cannot go wrong!
So go for it! |

| reply to acadiel Hah, funny coincidence, I saw that on the refurb list last night and forwarded it to my sister this morning -- I'm pretty sure she pulled the trigger.
Looks like an excellent deal. I have an 800 Mhz G4 iBook (my first Mac) from 2 years ago and haven't had a moment's difficulty with it --- donated it to my lab last year and it has had it's share of knocks. Still going strong.

We cancel each other out.
Seriously though, Apple has many divisions. Unless your friend is directly associated with the refurbishing of computers he might as well work for a completely different company. |

1 edit | Well, I did it - but for another model. About the only thing I might do is yank that 60GB out of there and put a 100GB in that's a 5400RPM.
Fatwallet.com had a deal going with $5 cashback bonus for ordering through fatwallet.com, plus 2.5% cash back from Apple. That's almost $32 I get back. |

| By the way, I was going to ask -
Does the iBook's USB ports have enough juice to power an iPod as well as power something like this? »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···17146605
(I'm not taking it apart right now to put another HD in it - I do have a 2.5" external HDD in that case though that's 60GB, so that'll be OK for right now.)
Thanks! |

About the only thing I might do is yank that 60GB out of there and put a 100GB in that's a 5400RPM. yank is the wrong word.. more like gingerly take apart battery, about a 20 screws, plastic top bottom, aluminum shields, memory, airport card with more screws, wires, bluetooth assembly, more screws and then finally the hard drive... and then put it all back together and see if it works..... ibooks are not made for the casual upgrader. Don't drink or get stoned before doing this...and have some scotch ready for when you're done... oy!

| Ben,
Yeah, I saw the instructions on PBFixIt. Boy, that's a lot of screws. I'm pretty good, but I think I'll try and use that 60GB in the 2.5" enclosure externally first!!!(see two posts up.) I just need to figure out if it'll work or not with the power draw.
Thanks! |

| I've had decent luck with the Macally enclosures (I've used the full sized ones with ext. power). I did have an Addonics enclosure destroy one of my HDDs.
Have you considered one of the FW enclosures? The Mercury ones from OWC are excellent (I have 2 of them). I know that they cost more, but they work great. I partioned one of my old 2.5" drives into two and use one for a clone of my work laptop and the other for storage/Photoshop scratch. The great thing about the FW drives is that you can boot from them (with ext power) --- I clone my drive before every business trip and you can't beat the peace of mind should there be a disaster.
Just my $0.02. And hey, don't you have a little one around the house? Good thing you went with the rugged iBook!
