OWC drives, any good??

I am thinking of getting an OWC drive, any good?

400GB OWC Mercury Elite-AL PRO 800 RAID Dual Drive 7200RPM FireWire 800/400 Oxford 912 Storage Solution w/16MB Data Buffer(8MB per HD). FW800 & FW800 to 400 Cables, Dantz Retrospect Express, and Intech Speed Tools Included. 2yr Warranty. (OWCME8R7400GB16)

This one uses Seagate Barracuda 7200.8
The 500 uses Hitachi Deskstar T7K250

I think OWC's stuff is pretty good, but I've never had a hard drive from them....but their RAM rocks!

I believe the 300gb model was in a review in Macworld this month, and came in a close second to the Iomega black triple interface drive..

**EDIT** changed Mac World to Macworld..

yeah, I looked at that. I think that was a non raid drive. I am really looking for people that have used it and how well it worked for them. I am getting an external drive for Christmas to use as a back-up for my music and photo's. I have an iMac G5 first gen. So I can only use FW400. I may put all my music on the drive and use it as my primary drive for iTunes, not sure.

Are you setting it up for raid0? or raid1? I am not sure there is a benefit to striping if you are only using fw400, and mirroring, it may be cheaper to buy 2 single disk enclosures..

You can probably get away with a one drive (smaller, cooler, cheaper) external enclosure if its just for music/photo storage..

my 2cents

I was going to use raid1 (mirroring). I like the idea of it in one case. Show me some options, I am open to ideas. I want redundancy though.

When I was working on optimizing my new Dual G5 last year I read through a ton of threads over at the MacGurus site: »www.macgurus.com . Their forums are very helpful and they sell sturdy stuff that they support well.

No affiliation, but a satisfied customer.

Go with the OWC drives.

I've had a Mercury On-The-Go for at least 3 years now, and that thing has saved my bacon on many occasions ...

Highly recommended!

I've had an OWC Mercury Elite Pro FW HD for about a year and a half. It runs great and has never let me down.

OK, how do you think they compare to "G-Drives"? I know they don't offer Raid1 (mirroring). Just looking and trying to keep my options open. I am no longer considering Lacie since I have heard bad things about them. So please don't mention them, I wanna try to keep it on the subject.

I personally use $25 coolmax aluminum oxford 911 chipset firewire external enclosures, and I get acceptable music/movie playback speeds, with 250gb PATA 7200rpm drives in them..

The OWC, Iomega and G-drive are nice looking, but personally I wont pay a premium price for looks.. my cheap(er) solution has not failed me yet..

If you can handle waiting for rebates.. you can score a 250-300gb HD for under $100 ( sometimes alot less )..

If you are looking into the speedy solutions, I would go with something ( first google response ) like:

and get an external SATA drive/enclosure

OWC is all right

Bought two external drives from them. Never a problem.
