[Packet8] Toll-free voice mail access: Free from payphones?

Packet8 seems to use a toll-free 800 number to let you check your voice mail from out of the house.

I've seen almost no discussion of this feature online.

I wondered: Is it free even if you call from a pay phone? Many providers add a 50-cent surcharge to your bill for every call placed to an 800 number associated with your account, so I wondered if Packet8 did this with regards to the voice mail number.

The ability to check voice mail from a payphone for free is pretty much the main thing that has attracted me to Packet8. I'm worried that Packet8's audio quality will be inferior (people tend to say that Vonage, at its highest bandwidth setting, sounds a lot better), but I want to be able to stay in touch while I walk around the city without dropping quarters every half hour.

I haven't specifically tried this recently, but in the past there was no charge for checking my VM though the 800 number - payphone or not.

Re: [Packet8] Toll-free voice mail access: Free from payphones?

I haven't checked my P8 voicemail from a payphone in quite some time; however, I'm pretty sure I have done so before. I don't recall ever being charged a fee for doing so via the toll free number. Furthermore, I'm not aware of any such fees in the TOS (although I haven't looked at the Packet8 TOS latley).

As far as voice quality, you can install unlocked P8 DTA-310/BPA-410 firmware (available in threads here) to configure your adapter to use G.711U (i.e. the same CODEC Vonage uses in its highest bandwidth setting).

Changing to a different codec on your box actually works on Packet8's end? Is this something you've done personally?

Payphones? Are there any of those things still around?

Seems to work well for the outgoing calls, anyway...

All these posts and not one lists the 800 #. Nevertheless, I think the OP deserves a thumbs up since no one I knew was aware of this feature.

And also means you can check your messages using FWD from a softphone for free!

From FWD you're better off dialing the non toll free # (using the FWD --> P8 peering prefix of **898) as follows:

**898 1-650-353-4400

This way the call will be a "pure" VoIP call (i.e. no PSTN --> VOIP conversion).
