[Split] Slow in Franklin, MA

I'm using a new laptop with Intel PRO Wireless 2200. It is so slow that I know something must be wrong. After reading a note above, I went and tested the speed at the web referenced above. This is what I got. Notice the huge difference in comparison to others in my area. I'm at the bottom of the list at 254/365. What could be wrong and how can I fix it? Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks, Pep

Welcome to BBR and the Comcast HSI Forum, Pep610 See Profile.

I split your post out of this topic: »[Speed] Very slow speeds/Very choppy connection. HELP Since the other issue was in a different state, it is highly unlikely yours is caused by the same source.

More information would help others assist you, such as:

Make/model of your modem and router.

Are you tweaked? If not, please run this test and post the URL in this thread. »/tweaks

What is your actual download speed from the OOL FTP site?
Optimum Online's FTP Test - download test64 file to your desktop

What speed do you get when you download this file?
»chlm-cdn01.chelmsfdrdc2.ma.bosto···zard.exe

Are you running Zone Alarm V.5.xx? If so, completely uninstall it, reboot the computer and test again.

The above should get you started troubleshooting. Again, a big welcome.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome and thanks for being here!

Modem - Motorola Surfboard - Model #SB5120
Router - Netgear 54 Mbps - WGR614 v4

**********************

Tweak (Not sure if I filled in correct info?)

Service - Wireless (or should I have said cable?)
Speed - 54.0
OS - Win XP Pro
Connection - Routerpppoe (not sure if this is right?)

Results for the answers I gave:

»/tweakr/block:···terpppoe

**********************

I downloaded Test64 to my desktop but could not open it? Computer couldn't recogniz file type?

**********************

When I try to check the speed, Comcast tries to set-up my computer but it changes my IP address and then I get a message that it is unable to establish a connection. I have to manually change my IP back again to get on the internet. I use 192.168.10.1 as the default gateway because I was getting interference from someone in the area and couldn't use the internet at all on my desktop using 192.168.10.0. Could this be causing a problem?

*************************

I do not use Zone Alarm.

Thank you, Pep

You don't need to open the file. You just need to watch the progress bar and note the download speed. Delete the file and try again.

Do the same with this one: »chlm-cdn01.chelmsfdrdc2.ma.bosto···zard.exe

Tell us the transfer rate reported in KB/per seconds when the file is nearly completely downloaded.

In regard to the tweaks, an RWIN of 64240 and MTU of 1500 usually works well for most cable speeds. That's what I use for the 8000/768 tier.

Download DrTCP, set the RWIN at 64240 or 65535, the MTU for your NIC at 1500, everything else at default. Save that, reboot and test again.

Download DrTCP to your desktop: »/drtcp

Additionally, I am guessing from your posted speed tests you are subscribed to the 6000/384 tier. Based on that and the fact cable users should choose normal for connection type, I fixed your tweak results, so you can follow this URL and look at the suggestions.

»/tweakr/···a=normal

I think you have the RWIN too low for best results.

Here are some java speed test sites which should be near you. Make sure when you are testing speeds you aren't running anything else which could be using your connection.

As you can tell, I'm not very computer savvy.

OK, I d/l DrTCP and changed the RWIN to 65535 and the MTU to 1500, rebooted, and then did the speed tests.

Download time on Test64 = 259 KB/Sec

Download time on chlm-cdn01.chelmsfdrdc2.ma.boston.comc.. = 216 KB/Sec

Download time on Speakeasy = 26.3 KB/Sec
upload time = 45.1 KB/Sec

Download time on Charter Communications was as follows on 3 different size files:

Download #1
------------------------------------------------------------
File size transferred : 0.5 MB (526348 bytes)
Total time taken : 15.78 seconds (15781 milliseconds)
Throughput : 33.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.03 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]

Post a new tweak test.

Run a line test: »/linequality

I'm sorry, but I can't figure out how to make my computer pingable. I tried to follow the directions to making Norton's pingable, but couldn't because the screens were not the same in the examples shown and my Norton's program.

Well, normally the router is the main culprit for not being pingable. You disable "Block Wan Request". I run Norton and don't have to change anything to be pingable.

Have you tried a tweak test or line test to know whether you are pingable or not?

Can you just disable Norton while doing the line test?

I did both the tweak and line test. Both said I was not pingable. I thought I disable NIS when doing the line test, but I'll do it again to be sure.

When doing the line test, do I just use the IP address that it gives me?

Thanks, Pep

How you do that is dependent on what router make/model you have, what firmware is installed. Check your router manual and/or instructions on the manufacturer's website.

pep610, to become pingable go to the advance section on your routers setup page and go into the Configure WAN setup options. I've enclosed an attachment with a screen shot of the page. just put a check in the "respond to ping on internet port" check box and you should be pingable. I'm also in franklin,ma and haven't had any problems.

Open a browser up, type 192.168.0.1, hit enter.
When the box comes up for Username & Password, leave username blank & put "admin" in for password.
Once you are in the setup pages, look for an option for block WAN request or Block Anonymous Internet Requests.

I found there was an update on Windows for my wireless. I installed it, made the router pingable, and then tweaked it again and rebooted.

These are now the results of the line test:

»/quality/nil/1900772

And these are now the results of the new speed tests:

Download time on Test64 = 703 KB/Sec

Download time on chlm-cdn01.chelmsfdrdc2.ma.boston.comc.. = 749 KB/Sec

Download time on Speakeasy = 769 KB/Sec
upload time = 45.1 KB/Sec

Download time on Charter Communications was as follows on 3 different size files:

Download #1
------------------------------------------------------------
File size transferred : 0.5 MB (526348 bytes)
Total time taken : 0.76 seconds (765 milliseconds)
Throughput : 688.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.69 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 5504.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 5.5 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Download #2
------------------------------------------------------------
File size transferred : 1.0 MB (1043600 bytes)
Total time taken : 1.42 seconds (1422 milliseconds)
Throughput : 733.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.73 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 5864.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 5.86 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Download #3
------------------------------------------------------------
File size transferred : 10.88 MB (11405532 bytes)
Total time taken : 15.8 seconds (15797 milliseconds)
Throughput : 722.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.72 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 5776.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 5.78 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

*********************************

Does it look like my problem is fixed? I've not surfed the web or anything since doing the above, but the numbers above sure look much better.

Nothing wrong with those speeds.
You are averaging with the tests: 727 KB/sec = 5816

Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate it. Do I now have to change the settings on my router back to what they were so I'm not pingable or do I leave them as is?

Thanks, Pep
