[Xtreme] Bellsouth Xtreme Ping Issues.

Hi, I am posting about recent problems I have been having with my bellsouth xtreme DSL internet.

The problem started I guess a few weeks back when I noticed my ping on all my favorite gaming servers jump from about 40-50ms to 100-120+, is there any apparent reason for this? I tried calling bellsouth tech support but they didn't seem to know what I was talking about and just sent me a new modem, which didn't help at all.

Here are my modem's statistics.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Don't see any statistics, but it sounds like you got put on interleave for more reliable sync and a lower BER (bit error rate, CRC errors).

This causes your ping to the first hop to go up, which affects your overall ping time.

do a trace route to your gaming servers and see where the jump in latency is....It could possibly be outside BellSouth's network.

example:

go to start-->run
type in: cmd (hit enter)
type: tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (x's being the IP address)

Re: [Xtreme] Bellsouth Xtreme Ping Issues.

well, from your tracert, it definitely looks like your problem is to your first hop...You've got about a +/- 40ish ms ping to just the first hop which is way off base unless like someone else said- you've been somehow changed to interleave.

Have you had any problems with your DSL before this happened? If not, there have been many success stories of customers calling support and getting changed off interleave... Good luck, many here are more than happy to help.

Re: [Xtreme] Bellsouth Xtreme Ping Issues.

It was perfectly fine before this started happening.. And yea it's on interleave now and I think it wasn't before.. I'll try calling and see if I can get it switched back tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

It seems as if youre having the same issue I was had/have. I was on the Ultra(1.5Mbit) service, then upgrade to (3.0Mbit). Shortly after, I was automatically moved from FastPath to Interleaved. To make a long story short, the quality of line coming to my house isnt good enough to handle 3.0Mbit speeds consistently without errors, so I am forced to use Interleaved and have high ping, or go back down to 1.5Mbit for lower ping. I decided to mostly quit gaming and keep the 3Mbit speed.

Unfortunately, if your issue is the same as mine, then theres nothing that you can do short of waiting for Bellsouth to upgrade the infrastructure in your area.

Cliff notes: You can get a BS tech to switch back to fastpath, but unless you like calling BS every other day, you stuck with interleaved.

Long version: Oh, and one other thing. At a few points, I called up Bellsouth and by asking multiple times I was able to talk to an intelligent technician who knew what fastpath/interleaved is and got the smart tech to switch me back to fastpath. However, it only stayed at fastpath until I encountered too many errors, and I lost connection.

At that point(and this is whats important), when my DSL modem when to reconnect, it automagically went back to interleaved.

Furthermore, even on interleave, your SN margin is at the very bottom end of specification (6.0) and your Attenuation is out of spec at 61. If you go back to Fastpath from interleave, you're almost assuredly not going to hold sync.

Interleave is the source of your high pings, but you need to find the source of your bad line stats. I would check your stats at the NID to make sure you don't have an inside wiring issue that can be resolved. If the stats are similar, your best bet honestly is to downgrade to Ultra service. It will be more stable, and at that point you might be able to get back on fastpath.

Ok.. I have been switched to Interleaved as well. I am using 3.0 Xtreme. Here are some of my stats:

Line State Up
Modulation G.DMT-Mode
Data Path Interleaved

Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
NN Margin (db) 13.5 not defined
Line Attenuation (db) 45.0 not defined
CRC Errors 3 6

OK.. i see that 45 is sort of high.. Could this be caused by the 25ft phone cord running from the jack to the modem? I haven't had any sync issues, but maybe this is why I have been put on interleaved.

Re: [Xtreme] Bellsouth Xtreme Ping Issues.

Thanks for all the help guys! Guess it's time for me to switch over to cable though, I'm tired of having to do all this stuff just to get a stable internet.. My friends right next to me have cable and theirs is perfect, so I'm gonna try that I think.

Thanks again.

jbaird, you should probably start your own thread to begin your troubleshooting process.

That said, your stats, while not beautiful, are certainly well within spec. That's not to say that they were not out of spec when you were on fastpath, however. You could call and have your line put back on fastpath and you might be ok, but if ping time is not terribly important to you, you should have a pretty stable connection as it stands right now.
