| [Vonage] Phone adapter behind firewall problem
I have the vonage phone adapter Motorola VT1005 and Belkin Pre-N wireless router.
My Phone Adapter: »www.vonage.com/device.php?type=VT1005RB
My Router: »catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductP···d=184316
I'm getting choppy calls when the phone adapter is placed behind the router. It works perfectly fine when it's in front of the router though. For various reasons, I need the phone adapter behind the router.
Correct ports have been forwarded (including DMZ Host set) but I'm still having problems. I get a dial tone, but when making or receiving calls, the voice is broken up in 1 sec. intervals. Can anyone offer suggestions to fix this problem?
EDIT: I posted a different thread that's outdated and the problem was never resolved. Thanks. |

1 edit | The problem was not resolved because you did not like any of the answers/suggettions that you received. I will repeat a few of the most likely cures for your technical problems.
Your Motorola VT1005 has been reported by others in several forums as having the symptoms you describe, so one solution might be to get another ATA (such as the Linksys RTP300). I have three Vonage VOIP lines and use a Linksys RT31P2 and a Linksys RTP300 both of which are behind a wireless router connected to Comcast. Both ATAs and all three lines work without the problems you are experiencing.
Your Belkin Pre-N wireless router does not support QOS (or if it does, Belkin does not advertise it), so another solution might be to get a wireless router which does support QOS.
You mentioned in another thread that you used Comcast, but I do not recall if you said what speed tier you have. Since your problem is related to bandwidth, if you have the silver tier (6 mbps/384 kbps), you might improve your VOIP quality by upgrading to the gold tier (8 mbps/768 kbps).
It was previously suggested that you try lowering the bandwidth used by your VOIP by selecting 50 kbps instead of the default 90 kbps setting. Doing so will not lower your voice quality in any way that a human ear can detect. Did you try that yet? -- A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Test your firewall. |

| I didn't accept any of the answers because I wanted to get it working with the equipment I already have. Using the bandwith saver was one of the first things I've tried with no luck. Instead of buying new equipment, I just left the vonage box outside of the router since this is the only way it'll work.
I'm not spending more money for equipment that I don't need. |

| Actually, my first reply to one of your previous posts: said by NetFixer : Why not just use what works? cable modem > vonage box > other devices on LAN....
was rejected by you at that time. -- A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Test your firewall. |

| Maybe someone can shed some light on this situation.
Here's the security log from my belkin router.
DoS LOg:
2005-12-07 00:53:51 [UDP Flood] (UDP) WAN to LAN 208.49.157.xx:12408->71.198.89.xxx:33007 [Drop] 2005-12-07 00:53:51 [HOST Attack: UDP Flood] (UDP) LAN to WAN 192.168.2.xxx:10050->208.49.157.xx:12408 [Drop]
Would anyone know how to make my belkin router not drop these connections? |

1 edit | NetFixer, if you're still reading this thread..
I found a thread with a similar problem w/out a solution. Maybe you could take a look and see if you can help?

EDIT: Problem solved. QoS was on by default, it was under the "wireless" tab in the control panel. Manually disabled firewall (under the main firewall tab, not the sub-tabs where I spent 3 hours looking). Vonage works fine now and I have my phone adapter behind my router without having to buy new equipment. |

1 edit | reply to Neosum Not to nitpick but the router in question does feature QOS and does mention it in the online manual:
»web.belkin.com/support/download/···_man.pdf
Page 49 (51 of 119) and 50 (52 of 119)
Hope this helps.
Cheers! |
