Re: [Connectivity] Comcast VS. DSL?

Its ok, its a LINE issue...and the modem is a Motorola SB5120, just a little over 1 yr old........as stated before, the problems started with the August upgrades, and have been reported to Comcast. LINE tech is needed, and the last call in to tech support stated as such, just that I have to go through a series of loops of reporting it 1000x before they send one....very frustrating.
Just a comment on your DSL comment; I have had nowhere near the trouble with my DSL that you had, or are now having with Comcast.

As for this being a line issue; and an intermittent one at that. I can sympathize. One of the only two times I had a clear outside issue with my loop (voice at that, not DSL), the trouble was intermittent. But it always happened in the period when SBC would not roll a truck, and was never evident when a service tech was on site. It took them two weeks before they rolled both a telephone tech and a DSL tech. They consulted with each other, compared their voice and data readings, and, finally, scheduled a cable maintenance ticket (telephone counterpart to line tech, I guess).

I suppose the problem comes down to the intermittent nature. Truck rolls cost, and the company becomes reluctant to spend a lot of time/money chasing a will'o'the wisp. You seem to have done all you, as a customer, should be expected to do. Keep on them. Comcast was not terribly responsive to me over an issue with their drop. We don't have Comcast, TV or cable HSI; but their contractors left a drop lying loose in our yard after switching from the old analog cable to the new digital cable. The landlady had analog cable TV until she got tired of problems and switched to satellite. The old, pre-Comcast, company never removed the drop.

Weird, there were no problems with it before August, before the last upgrade cycle. So, you're saying the chipset went bad at the same time of the upgrades?
No. I think when they did the speed upgrade you went from QAM 64 to QAM 256. This particular modem has problems with QAM 256 systems. When you were on the old QAM 64 system everything was fine.

That's what happened to me. I was fine until the speed upgrade and then my Signal to Noise Ratio dropped like a rock. On the Moto 5120 it was about 27dB. Switching to the RCA cause it to jump back up to 39dB and all was well after that.
Hmmmm, and I thought the Motorola Modems were suppose to be da bomb! ... oh well, guess not

Your modem is the problem. I had the same issue until I swapped it out. Do a search of this forum for SB5120 and you can read the prior threads about it. This modem has a known bad chipset in it. Swap it out for another brand. I got an RCA and all of my connection issues went away.

Edit - Here's the thread I started on the subject:

I wouldn't have a problem if they swapped out the modem AND added a booster to my line.... that should fix it either way

Well we could try to help you but after reading 4 of your post in this thread we still don't know what kind of fricking modem you have.
