[DSL] AOL 9 Not loading

Hello everybody. I am trying to fix a friends Aol, and am having probs. When I go to load Aol, it says:

Aol will now install the files required for you to connect to the service.

Then a black windows appears with some text saying:

...... UrlUpd.exe

then nothing happens. What gives? I think the problem stems from Aol's start page being hijacked by another search engine / Home page. I mangaged to use Aol's programs to remove the offending spam, and did all the virus checks. But the problem remains.

Is there an easy way to remedy this, or do I have to resort to Uninstalling Aol then reinstall (Pain in the Ass).

I wonder if anybody has had the same problems.
Thank you, if anybody can help.

Wayne.

hmmmm, try rebuilding the aol adapter first then try to connect with the software.

I did some searching on UrlUpd.exe, and the only thing I can find to reference that is something about spambots, try running a spyware and virus scan, just to see if anything is present. It is strange tho.

just a guess

I saw the same on my machine, it also had device manager and network control panel BLANK... after multiple failled attempts, I ran rootkit revealer and found a morph of the Apropos malware.. once I removed the hidden folder in program files, and the hidden files in system32 and system32\driver it worked. Just be sure to use the rootkit revealer otherwise you'll never see the culprits

Thank you very much for all your suggestions. You have just described what is wrong with the system I am trying to fix, cheers. I will try this rootkit thing.

here is the cure for you..........
Remove Virus Influence (Regedit Fix)

Note the Driver Name located in this folder. Each Driver Names varies e.g. NTAdmin etc ... Scroll back to the top of the Registry. Click the - beside any folders if you are having difficulty locating any of the folders. Where x is a number between 1 and 9. Locate the Driver Name folder, note in this example it will be called NTAdmin, note this name may vary from computer to computer. Two or more CONTROLSET00x folders will exsist in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM folder.

The Driver Name folder will need to be deleted from each of the SERVICES folders in the CONTROLSET00x folders.
NB: Close all open programs.
Click on Start, Run. In Run type MSCONFIG and click OK.
Click the Boot.ini tab.
Tick /Safeboot.
Click OK and let the computer restart, when prompted.
Click on Start, Run. In Run type Regedit.
Click on Edit, Find.
Type adchannel and click on Find Now.
Once adchannel is located, it should reference to LegalNotes.

Please use Edit and Find Next if the Legal Notes Reference is not found.
Locate Driver Name and note the name given. (see more info)
Scroll back to the top of the Registry Editor. and click on the + beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click on the + beside SYSTEM.
Click on the + beside CONTROLSET00x.(see more info)
Click on the + beside SERVICES.
Locate the Driver Name folder, and delete it.(see more info)
Repeat steps for all CONTROLSET00X folders. (see more info)
Close Regedit.
Startup AOL as far as the Sign-on Screen and close it down again.
Click on Start, Run. In Run type MSCONFIG and click OK.
Click the Boot.ini tab.
Untick /Safeboot.
Click OK and let the computer restart when prompted.

AOL has posted it's own variant of a fix for this issue out on »www.aol.com/connfix including small utility that removes the Malware/Spyware piece that is causing the problems.

Suggest running a full Spyware and Virus scan after getting bugger removed.

I had the same problem, and downloaded the »www.aol.com/connfix onto a disk via my laptop and transferred it to my pc and it worked immediately.
thanks for all your help!

Please can you help? I see an error message when I try to load AOL 'AOL will now install the files required for you to connect to the service. Click yes to install these files.'...

Nothing happens after clicking yes. Tells me to restart and repeats error message.

Any solution?

Thanks.

Hi Yacoc, have you tried all of the above mentioned answers in this section of the forum. I think that you will find your answer there. I had the same problem as you so it seems. Let me know if you still can't get it working. But if you follow `clever guy's' instructions you should be able to rid yourself of this prob. Ok.

I have attempted clever guys instructions, but with no luck!

Click on Start, Run. In Run type MSCONFIG and click OK.
Click the Boot.ini tab.
Tick /Safeboot.
...I dont have a Boot.ini tab..

Also when searching for the 'adchannel', nothing comes up.
I really dont understand how to fix this, Ive tried loads of stuff, also as mentioned to me the confix thing, but the malware is said to not be found on my computer..eeek.

Did you do a search in regedit for adchannel or via windows search? If it was in Regedit make sure that you click at the top of the file tree to begin your search from there. If you still can't find adchannel then maybe another piece of malware or spam is affecting your system.
Also that safe boot thing is only starting in safe mode at startup so that no drivers are loaded. Go into safemode via dos (press F8 or F5 I think to display the startup menu). Plus use adware or spybot to scan your pc for spam.
