Earlier this week I did likewise. While I did not get the immediate improvement noted by ghost641, I have found that, now for the fourth night in a row, after midnight BT runs as it did pre-throttling.

I can get BT downloads pretty much anytime of the day or night. During the day, uploading is essentially zero. But late at night, uploading works fine.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the upgrade ... maybe I just didn't notice it before.

I was just wondering, how do you set your port free for port 1720? I tried using it for azureus and it says that I should free up my udp port. I freed my port in the router settings as well as my firewall settings. How do I make it so that if any other program is using that port I make it stop using it? thanks
the only other program that uses port 1720 is Microsoft Netmeeting.

to cgigate See Profile ... theirs prolly no throttling box near ur area or else u would have been complaining just like the rest of us. try it enjoy it while it lasts

Re: [Extreme] Bittorrent is suddenly working for me....

I decided to test out this throttling. I used ~59GB bandwidth last month. At the second week of this month, the BT speeds went straight down from ~400KB/sec on torrents with like ~5000 seeders/~1000 leechers to ~1-10KB/sec on EVERY torrent, legal or not. I have heard people say that Linux torrents usually have better seeders, nope. Still ~1-10KB/sec constantly. Some of the torrents go at less then 1KB/sec even. This is in Mississauga.

From reading a cited article on the P-Cube site, it seems they try to classify all kinds of traffic signatures and keep them updated ....
Thanks for that link. I had previously looked at P-Cube's site but missed that paper. It gives us a pretty good idea of what we're facing. It seems that Rogers has picked the "upstream control" strategy (see p. 9) ... but I wish they'd follow the example case of limiting the subscriber to 24 kbps - right now, my upload is essentially zero!!

BT works all fine with me on Rogers!
Even I have no idea why people says Rogers blocks BT.

well... it's a couple days later and I can very much confirm that bittorrent is still running perfectly. I wish I could say I understood what happened... But I'm not complaining...

From reading a cited article on the P-Cube site, it seems they try to classify all kinds of traffic signatures and keep them updated kind of like virus updates. It is possible to implement encryption that is effectively impossible to decipher but it's more important to not give clues as to what type of communications is going on. Even when using things like SSH or VPN, there are markers that identify what it is so you can communicate. I suspect that what might happen though is that if P2P encryption becomes unidentifiable then all "unknown" traffic might end up being throttled.

Most users are just web and email people. I wonder what kinds of complaints would surface if they started to severely throttle "unknown traffic".

I had a similar experience earlier this week. I upgraded to the latest version of BitTornado which is supposed to have a new feature that makes it more difficult to throttle. Immediately, BT performed as it did prior to throttling. Immediate connections, high speeds up and down. I too was excited!

But today, things have deteriorated. Most of my torrent attempts are failing as they have been doing since throttling began in my area a month ago ... it's as if the throttle box learns to adapt to new situations.

Same here in North york. My speeds are almost 200 to 250 KB/sec. No jokes.
I had never tried movie downloads yet. but tried and worked for me. Average was 190KB/sec Today. No changes in ports. Buddy few meters away regularly downloads at high speeds.

Re: [Extreme] Bittorrent is suddenly working for m

I used to get 600K down but only 32K up max no matter what. Lately I get 600/98. Maybe Rogers is moving around their boxes and experimenting to see which areas can handle what upload speed. I didn't switch to port 1720 or make any changes so it's all them.

[Extreme] Bittorrent is suddenly working for me....

Hi... My BT has been throttled for the better part of the last year. I was really at the point where I had given up any hope of it working again. Yesterday I phoned rogers and asked them to upgrade me to the 6mbit service (i was previously using 5mbit). Suddenly my bittorrent is working exactly as it is supposed to. I'm in downtown Toronto. has anyone else had this happen???

i'm quite excited.
