My father works for Verizon and told me he was informed they would be offering a new FIOS option for $14.95. The down speed will be 1Mbps, but he couldn't remember what the up will be. Not sure if this will just be an NYC thing or nationwide. |

| reply to RWoods I highly doubt they will offer a $14.95/month FIOS plan. They are offering DSL at that rate for 768/128. It costs hundreds of dollars to install FIOS to each residence and sometimes thousands if they run into big problems. They aren't going to do all that for $14.95/month.
However, they might in a few years. I hope they DO do it but I doubt it. I see their DSL service as the "filler" between dialup and broadband. They know this and offer the service dirt cheap. Sure, it doesn't reach everyone but it "works for them."

This will allow them to get into people's homes. |

Yeah, apparently they had some type of meeting about it last week. The issue was raised concerning a budget package and the cost of installing FIOS. Apparently Verizon feels that the most important thing now is getting into people's homes, so everything's in place when they are able to roll out the FIOS TV.
Also, he was given a price chart for what TV service is going to cost in NJ...I'll see if he can fax me over a copy Monday. |

| It's certainly in Verizon's best interests to get as many customers as possible regardless of the costs associated with the installations.
As far as Manhattan, there are some limited offerings in the East 56th Street district. Mainly new buildings and a small "trial run" on Roosevelt Island. |

@optonline.net | reply to RWoods I expected something like this eventually, seems kinda early yet though. It would make more sense after they'd switched the early adoptors, had enough installers trained and rolled out enough that they could start with regional advertising. |

GeekNJ Premium join:2000-09-23 Waldwick, NJ | I too think it is early, though who knows when it might start up. I figured when FIOS TV was available, at that time a bundle or low cost option would make a lot of sense. |

Now there really hasn't been any indication of that from the media, but maybe they know something...?
As for the $14.95 FIOS, it's not going to be heavily advertised like the budget DSL. It's going to be targeted towards people who have the $14.95 DSL where FIOS available, people who call and inquire specifically about the $14.95 package, and those who inquire about FIOS and show some trepidation regarding the price. |

2 edits | Some people may think that the 14.95 FiOS is a waste of time/money. Well, think about this. You hook-up a whole town of lets say, 60,000 people with Fiber. Nobody wants to switch because of price. Ummm. You spent thousands of dollars into the development. One year passes, nobody signs up. You are losing money. Now, everyone signs up for the lower price, $11,520,000/per year. Assuming $16/customer. Imagine, "Honey, if we sign up for FiOS Tv, we'll be discounted some money, and since we have telephone with Verizon, well save even more." BAM! Triple Play. Bringing verizon an estimated 50 million from that town. Smart Move! Very Smart!!!
Edit: If you don't agree with me, please, let's not start a flame war, as I am only 14 yrs old, my information/calculations may not b as accurate as I thought them out in my mind.

I guess since they are going to get everyone changed over eventually they might as well do it now, but I figured for the time being they would go after people who want their services for what they are (most of us) and not the sitting duck market who goes to whoever is cheapest and not who is best. Meaning more money for rollouts right now. Deploying to these $14.95/month people will not net them a profit as fast as the people who really want the service.

| The people who really want the service are a minority. The people who are willing to pay for the medium 45$/month service are the majority. Then there are the 14.95$/month people who are in it for just internet access or so that they can get voip. Remember the main thing here is for Verizon to get into the customer's homes. Fios probably is not even their main selling concern. The TV industry at the moment is alot bigger. Most people pay double for TV what they do for internet. With Fios's virtually unlimited bandwidth they could push so much through that pipe that internet isn't even the tip of the iceberg. Alot of the these new services are borderline internet/TV in conception so it is arguably the same thing as internet. That 14.95 package would certainly get people off of dial up since there is no phone equipment to install unlike dsl. The point is it is just a cleaner deal, you are getting rock solid service for an amazing price. |

The way it was explained to me was that it was only going to be pushed on those who wouldn't want one of the other FIOS packages. |
