[DSL] Speedstream 5200 vs 5260 - performance difference?

I borrowed my friends Speedstream 5200 modem to use when setting up with my ISP (MyCybernet - 3meg). I've been getting rock solid 1.44mb download speed when running tests.

Now my friend asked to get the modem back.

So I went out and picked up a Speedstream 5260 modem.
Now I'm getting a very shaky 500-600kbs download.

Could someone explain why this would be?
In my naivety, I figured the 5260 is a newer model # so it should be at least as good.

Thanks

I think the 5200 is actually a newer model than then 5260. The 5260 is pretty old -- I got one 6 years ago when I signed up with Earthlink.

There should not be a performance difference unless your line is marginal or your testing site is not a good choice for stability.

The 5260 however is obsolete by a few years and has not been made in 4 or 5 years. The 5200 is a newer model, but it's now obsolete too as it has just been replaced by the 4200 in the last 6 months.

Both 5260 and 5200 units are rated for 8/1 ADSL service though and that leaves your line as the issue if the testing server you are using is working properly.

Try these tests sites.

I tried out the Broadband Tweek test and I guess it looks ok.

Here's my results for 3000/800 service behind a router.

I'm running with just default TCPip settings in XP.

One thing I did do which has help a bit...
I picked up a phone jack tester and found out that the outlet I've connected my modem to is wired wrong and has reversed polarity. Needless to say I re-wired it.

Funny though that the modems both worked.
The 5260 is working better now getting an average of 1100/400 which I can live with. I have no idea how far I am from a CO so I can't complain about it.

Thanks for your help.
I've never been one for installing and running "Tweak" utilities...are they really worth it?

Tweaking won't help if your connection is marginal (from your first post, I'd guess it might be...)

Frankly, you might do better at a lower provisioning (i.e. 1.5 down vs 3.0 down) since that would improve your overall noise margins.

You need to be pingable and rerun that test.

If you are talking about the DR. TCP program, it doesn't install anything and you can delete it after you use it if you like.

However it doesn't work on the XP PPPoE dialer.

It sounds like you read a lot of conflicting info elsewhere and should instead read the FAQs here at BBR:

The Tweaks Forum can help with all your related questions.

You ping is high. Try this test. While it's running, don't use your DSL (2-3 minutes).

Other than the high ping, the other stats look OK.

What do you speeds show when tested here:
