ECO & GDC

I've been asked to announce that the site's support for BBR Team Eco will be coming to an end.

The Site Administration has long been uncomfortable with supporting an effort run by an entity that really is not strictly a non-profit company, although it does make some charitable contributions. The feeling is that structured support/backing should be for non-profit initiatives only. This has been a long-standing problem, but it has been tabled for the benefit of the many site members who actively participate in ECO clicking. However, the site will no longer support this endeavor.

Now when you look at the activity here in GDC going back a long time, you can't help but notice that there is almost nothing but ECO posts and threads. So logic dictates that with the passing of site support for ECO, the GDC forum is essentially no longer needed. As a result, after a short period of time, GDC will be taken offline.

I'd like to take this opportunity to give credit to Paul ( Zhen-Xjell See Profile), 72245156 See Profile and many others for all they did to found and nurture the GDC forum, and to Starfish See Profile who founded Team ECO here at BBR. Naturally there will be sadness and disappointment at the termination of site support, but hopefully those who continue to avidly support the effort will be able to find another site or host to continue their activities.

I'm sorry to be the one faced with the task of making this announcement, but I'd like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has played a very important part in the rich history of GDC. In its time, this was a very active forum with a some terrific DC teams and a tremendous amount of real dedication and spirit. The good news is that we still have Helix, SETI, Discovery and RC5/72 where the positive efforts and dedicated crunching can and will continue for a long, long time. If you don't already contribute there, please consider doing so.
Make a difference.

I'm sorry I wasn't on the team longer and will miss my fellow team mates on this forum though I will see some in other places. I felt and still do feel, it is a worthy cause. Your leadership is very much appreciated!

Thanks, Tom, for the heads-up. This is all part of a very large book with infinite chapters.
It will be exciting to see what comes next.

It's been a nice ride here with Team Ecology and I have made a few friends along the way. I am sorry to see it fade away but I have hopes we can come together again soon with a new project.

I'm not sure what to say about this other than I'm sad to see our Team being dissolved.

Thanks KeysCapt for being our leader. Sorry you pulled the short straw in having to make the announcement.

The team does not necessarily have to be disolved, unless we want it to be. We just will not be supported by the site. There are other possible options.
We can throw in the towel,
Throw our lot in with another established team,
Stay a team and see if we can get the DSLR/BBR removed from the name - we would have no way to get new members or share information, but we would satisfy the site management and sever our ties.
Look for another site to support the team,
We can all go our individual ways.
Or we can look for another another environmental project that the site would fully support.

I've been doing eco clicks since November 2001, and this was the team that introduced me to other DC projects, so it will be sad to see it go by the wayside.

Closest project to being environmental is ClimatePrediction.Net, for which we have a team already, which, last time I checked, called this forum home. Of course, it requires your CPU time, but isn't that what distributed computing is about?

Well, CPU time is precious and expensive, so Climate Prediction takes away from other worthy projects. That is what was so sweet about doing clicks. So yes, contributing CPU time is part of what distributed computing is all about, but collaborative efforts toward a common end is also part of what DC is all about.

Has not the 'for profit' nature of the ecologyfund.com site ALWAYS been transparent to Justin & Co from the very beginning?

I suppose that taking a cold, clinical look at the activities of Team Ecology could lead to one conclusion that we all support a site/"charity" that's at it's best marginally philanthropic and at it's worst a money making click fest, but the optimist in me HAS to beleive that we've done SOME good in saving some part of our rapidly shrinking ECOsystem.

And now we are terminated......

I understand the way that the political winds blow here so I have no choice to tip my hat to all the fine folks here who have made this place far better then it would have been otherwise for as long as we've been priviledged to exist here in our little corner of BBR....

I salute you all my comrades in arms fellow ECOmaniacs and most importantly, my friends for your steadfast dedication.

I'm with grobnette.

How about we go independent? We can remove the BBR reference and maybe just our sig lines and word of mouth to get new members.

I moved my team membership over to Ars Technica because after nearly 5 years I am used to clicking.

I'd rather not join a team I don't know and I'm used to clicking every day. I hope we can come up with a way to keep the team together and just rename it.

We are empowered as a team. Let's find a cause (Ecology Fund or not) and help the less fortunate.

I'll support the group, I too have been clicking for some time, not as long as others but still do it on a daily basis.

I'll go with the groups wishes, I've seen some good suggestions.

Thanks for the news Tom, I'm sure it was tough to write the post.

Ars Technica is the only other forum I frequent besides Broadband Reports! If the points have to go somewhere I'd rather they go to Ars than to nowhere. Anyways . . .they have only 28 members . . .kinda hard to believe when Ars Technica has the strongest DC teams around.

"If and when" a team can get together here at BBR I will gladly switch over.

Thanks Cap'n for hosting this forum. There have been several small teams that have called this place home over the last few years, namely RC5, the Distributed Folding team, Lifemapper, and more I'm sure. It's been my pleasure to be a part of it. Crunch on and Click on everyone!

Sad news indeed.

»ecologyfund.com/ecology/groups_w···all.html

DSL Reports Ecology 20,889,035.2 square feet saved.
Second largest donation group overall.

Proud to have been part of the team.

Well done and keep clicking!

Will the stats site ( »www.theemanuels.com/bbr/eco/ecostats.html ) remain?

If so we could keep the team going and just not post on BBR?
(provided EcologyFund would rename the team - "Team Ecology"
or some such to remove the "DSL Reports" reference)

I can't speak for Starfish See Profile, but I'd be surprised if he didn't continue to make the stats available, if they are wanted.

I am not really sure what to say.. because I am _really_ busy lately, I'm not often visiting BBR.. and now I see all of this

The stats site, if indeed wanted, can remain. (Also with big thanks to FKrooG2 See Profile (=FKroog) for the hosting).

Given my current schedule, I am not sure how fast I can remove BBR/DSLR references though. (Probably not before the end of this month).

Is everyone ok with the name "Team Ecology" then? If so, I will ask the EcologyFund.com webmaster to change the name, which is hopefully possible in the first place.

For the rest I am really not sure what to say; the team which I founded and led for a number of years is now disconnected from this website.. and the forum which I hosted together with KeysCapt See Profile will disappear as well. It is such a strange idea.

But to quote something KeysCapt See Profile mentioned in my retirement thread in spring 2004:

"Change is good for the soul, and an essential part of life"

Let's hope that that will indeed be the case and close another chapter of DSLR/BBR history.
