The other function that this forum performed was nurturing new projects or at least it was a place for people to introduce new projects and discuss them.

I just don't see someone dropping in to an established project forum, introducing a new project and being warmly received.
I'm not sure if I'm following you 100%, grobinette See Profile.

We still have that here in this forum, unless the DC people at BBR decide to abandon the forum completely. It's still home to RC5 (whenever they feel like posting), CPDN and any of the non-SETI projects running on the BOINC platform.

You sure about that Ron?? This Quote from KeysCapt See Profile in the 1st post seems to indicate otherwise which is why I'm trying to transplant as much of Team Ecology as quickly as I can before the plug is pulled on this forum for good...

Now when you look at the activity here in GDC going back a long time, you can't help but notice that there is almost nothing but ECO posts and threads. So logic dictates that with the passing of site support for ECO, the GDC forum is essentially no longer needed. As a result, after a short period of time, GDC will be taken offline.

Isn't geek logic wonderful?

My logic states that if the people running RC5, CPDN, and any BBR BOINC project that doesn't fit the other forums start posting in this forum there won't be a reason to close it. Trouble is, on the surface it looked like the only use for this forum was for Ecology Fund clicks, which is the only thing which will be missing form this forum. With the forum no longer dominated by Ecology Clicks, people who participate in the other projects, or who want to post about an upcoming project, should feel more encouraged to post here.

If it can be shown there is a need for a forum, then the forum won't go away. I say there is a need for this forum, and the loss of it would create a void which could not be filled elsewhere on the site. Pulling this forum offline would be terribly short sighted. Mind you, if the removal of Ecology Clicks simply leaves a dead forum, then this forum's removal would make sense.

Logan is correct, from what I have been told. This forum is to be taken offline, although I suspect that would not be done before the forum host was contacted and advised.
IOW, I believe there will be some notice before the plug is pulled.

Edit: Kinguni and I are crossing posts.
I think the logic was that GDC was inactive save for the ECO posts, and without them, it would have no further purpose. It's true there are other projects, but there has been no activity here in support of those for some time.

You are correct, but that can be fixed. We have plenty of stuff kicking around to fill this forum usefully.

But in that case the projects are supporting the forum, rather than the forum having its existence to support the projects, and those who participate in them. If the forum was necessary for the projects, the activity would have existed prior to this, and wouldn't have to be 'fixed'.

At any rate, it's a decision that materialized at a higher pay grade than mine, and AFAIK it was predicated on the long term lack of any activity here other than ECO.

The sad part of closing this forum that it is a place to discuss new ideas. This forum bred Distributed Folding, which was a heck of a lot of fun in it's day. I've often wondered if there were other interesting programs out there that DSLR would support. We have great projects here that have their own venue, however, a change is fun and builds of lot of enthusiasm.
I for one would like to see more choices and this forum be utilized as a link of communication. If, it wasn't for this forum, DF, would have never been born.
