| [iO] Why do people complain about IO pricing?
I know this has been a much debated topic and I have done some research on this site and others. I see a lot of people complaining about IO pricing compared to Dish/DirecTV. Now, I'm looking to upgrade to digital cable so I've been shopping around and what I found was that IO's silver and gold packages are actually very competitive with the satellite offerings.
Am I missing something? I have a single TV setup and no need for a DVR.
Also, if anyone can confirm whether IO is all digital in brooklyn I'd really appreciate it  Thanks! |

1 edit | It's programming, not pricing, that sends most people to satellite. If you are a football nut, NFL Sunday ticket is exclusive to DirecTV. If you want Urdu, Farsi, Tagalog, Armenian and other International programming, Dish Network is the place. For me, some of the Dish Network channels I like that are not available on Cablevision include the 10 Voom high definition channels, HDNet and HDNet movies, BBC America, and the Sirius satellite radio music channels. |

1 edit | Both satellite companies have a much better selection of programming. Cablevision does not, and once you start going into iO gold and then end up paying $5 a month on top of the iO gold to get HBO on Demand, etc... it starts becoming expensive.
iO gold would be a killer package if they made it include all of the Video On Demand and interactive stuff for the same price... or if they made the sports pack "free" with iO gold. People would then have incentives to upgrade.... kind of like DirecTV... if you subscribe to their most expensive package, they will not charge you the 4.99 DVR fee. They also don't charge per DVR on your account either... so if you have their minimum package, you will pay the DVR fee, but you can have 10 DVR's and they will only charge you the mirroring fee... they wont charge you for the DVR service... |

my io silver with 3 dvrs after taxes/fees is costing me $100 a month, , switching to dish 120 with 3 room dvr, total monthly cost $61 |

Thanks for the responses guys, they were very helpful. Yossisiegel, your situation is very different from mine - I only have a single tv and no need for a DVR. But I can see that based on your needs, the comparison between cable and satellite can differ greatly. |

I think although I could be wrong that everything in Bklyn is transmitted digitally except for broadcast basic. I say that because CV mandates a box period. So if their going to mandate a box it might as well be a digital box so they can transmit digitally and generate revenue from On Demand features from the box. |

Having tried IO gold before I can say that Dish network pricing and picture quality is superior. However i dont have a High Def tv so I cannot comment on the offer on Dish vs. CV. I would be killed and chopped up by my kids if they ever thought i was going to get rid of Dish in favor of CV. CV is great for Internet and Tel service. The on demand thing is kool but you pay extra for it. So it all comes down to need. You state no need for a DVR and only one cable box. I do think the first box is free with CV so you could get DVR for free. Otherwise its 10 dollars per month. |

I think iO is a pretty good deal. Pricing was comparable to the dish services when I was researching this stuff a couple of years ago...not sure now.
However, it does appear FIOS tv will be slightly cheaper. The highest FIOS package, comparable to iO Gold, will come in at under $80. Plus, I the set top boxes are $1 cheaper. So you figure a family with 3 boxes and the top tier of service will save about $10/mo with FIOS...now only if it would be made available. 
Also, just glancing at what will be made, it appears FIOS will be offering greater programming than iO. |

Anyways, those prices are for fios tv in "test" areas in Texas, at this point there is no real reason to believe the prices will be the same for ny/nj/ct. Especially since providing tv service very well may involve different programming costs in different areas even for Verizon (thats how it is with all the cable companies, licensing fees and agreements are different depending on the area being serviced, even though it its the same exact service from the same exact company)

I'm forced to purchase the Family package at$50 and add IO plus the HD box for another $20. So I,m paying $70 for 10 HD channels. I think Sattelite TV is going to have a HDTV package only. I'm looking into it but the cost of the receiver is prohibitive. |

You don't even need io, I don't think, and you'd get some channels by directly plugging in the cable line to your HDTV tuner. In order to get certain channels, you would need to subscribe to a level of io service.

His digital tuner must also have a QAM tuner built-in. One of my TV comes with HD tuner built-in, but it doesn't have QAM. I can't get the digital channels without Cablevision's box. |

I was visiting some relatives in Brooklyn on Thanksgiving and the Cablevision analog box was working perfectly. I was told that some Brooklyn neighborhoods are now all digital but not where my relatives live.
I have the IO Silver package and it is a very good deal. I was considering switching to satellite, but I like some of the On Demand services of Cablevision. I will keep researching the price differences since I have a private home with plenty of room for the dish on my roof.

Where I live the Cablevision analog signal is far superior than the IO digital service. With IO video and audio quality are horrible, way too much compression at times. Which is not saying much because the analog is pretty crappy to begin with. I also lose all the I/O HBO channels for half a minute at 5 past the hour at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm for some reason but the rest of the hour it is fine.
I have had Dish Network and Directv which were far superior in audio/video quality than that of Cablevision I/O. The only problem with that was I got sick of cutting my neighbors trees and imposing on them to get a clear shot at the satellites.
Hopeful for FIOS TV in 2006, if we ever get it here. |

I'm happy with it but I want Fox Soccer and maybe checkout the HD stuff as well. |
