Re: Zone Alarm upgrade problem...

You'll need to boot into safe mode to get the file deleted. If you have tried this already. Then I'd have to do some further hunting to help you. But if you boot into safe mode and try to remove the file. It should no longer be in use and you should have no trouble deleting it.

This would also mean that unfortunately you'll most likely have to follow the long drawn out instructions you linked above.

After uninstalling and rebooting the pc are you getting an error when trying to install the new build?

Thanks Iggy, any help you can give would be appreciated. In both cases ( installing Ver 6.1 or 4.5) the installation went fine, but then it wouldn't run after configuring itself and the reboot. The tray icon was a yellow X on red, and the error message came up: " System error, please restart". So it installs, it just won't run, and in the meantime there is no internet access. I am going to try to remove the files while in safe mode. I have been following the step-by-step instructions above to do the clean uninstalls, but that hasn't cured the problem. (The reason that I felt that upgrading was a mistake for me is that I am behind a router, so I could probably have continued with version 2.6... It did a terrific job for three or four years.)

It worked! To be honest I didn't think it would, having spent a lot of hours muddling my way along. So, what I had left were two vsmon files and two VSDATANT.sys files. When I rebooted in safe mode and deleted them it restored internet access. I have to go back and un-reveal Hidden Files now. I also had a file zllictbl.dat which I think had been hidden. I deleted it, however I don't think that was the culprit. Anyway, many thanks to IGGY and koma3504, their clear and helpful instructions were great !
I found the details in this Zone Labs page useful:

Glad that worked. Unfortunately that is a headache of a way to have to do things. Aggravating would be the word I would use. The upgrade process has been improved upon over the years in regards to ZoneAlarm. But from time to time with new builds problems pop up. Especially when trying to update from the much older builds to the newest available.

The instructions you linked are also available on my site. I mention this do to the fact that Zone Labs has a very bad habit of moving helpful instructions or hiding them on obscure url's like the one linked above. I've mentioned this a time or two to them. Obviously they aren't listening very well to my feedback. which just makes things a pain for the average user.

That version is the older instructions.

Your link is updated. So I've now added those instructions on another url on my site.
