| Acer Ferrari; Is it worth it?
I'm thinking about buying an Acer Ferrari for the following reasons; •I plan on being a film student, so I need power. •I'd like to play a game once in a while •I also want battery life to last me theough a class or two •I want it to last me a few years
The main thing I'm concerned about with it is durability, and I have a little qualms about its battery life, but it isnt bad at all. What are your takes on this laptop, and would it make a nice laptop for my purposes?

I also work at Best Buy, and can get some good deals on laptops, is there anything there that may compare with the Ferrari? »www.bestbuy.com/site//olspage.js···category

| The previous model ran a bit hot, I believe (?) but this one has a more efficient setup according to the Laptop review: »laptopmag.com/Review/Acer-Ferrari-4000.htm -- Dawn,n,The time when men of reason go to bed. (Ambrose Bierce.) |

| I like the cons in that review.
Weak speakers: fine with me since I'll either have headphones, and I'm bringing my real speakers with me
Very little software included: Thats fine too, I was planning on just imaging the factory drive just in case, and then wiping the whole thing anyways. -- |Networking Help|My Blog

| I'll check about getting the warranty through Best Buy, but I don't know if they do that kind of thing. The warranty is one of the main things I was concerned about though. -- |Networking Help|My Blog| |

| reply to fegul Another thing; I cant find how big the power adapter is. On many Sony's, the power adapter looks and weighs as much a brick! I hope its small. -- |Networking Help|My Blog| |

| Warranties ( including Best Buy )discussed in this thread: »Do warranties pay? I would expect that the power brick is just the same as most laptops', if not bigger. The only way around this is to have one power brick at home and one at work, that way you don't have to lug them around. -- Dawn,n,The time when men of reason go to bed. (Ambrose Bierce.) |

| Thats also what I'm trying to do, but I gotta admit, the Ferrari looks pretty slick. For some reason, I havent been a fan of the Toshibas, but I work in the computer servicing industry so I see all the bad cases and none of the good ones
I've also been looking at some of Asus's and Sager's, but cant seem to find one I really like.
Any other brands that I may not have heard of but make a mean notebook that has performance and specs like the Ferrari, but not as quite a large sticker price? -- |Networking Help|My Blog

| reply to fegul If you don't need too much gaming capability, Lenovo/IBM probably makes some of the most durable notebook computers. Their new Z60m can be equipped with an ATI X600 which, while is not as powerful as the X700, is still okay for most applications. If you want something smaller, they have the T-series which comes with weaker graphics processors.
And Lenovo backs up their products well and they issue driver and BIOS updates regularly (unlike Acer). There are also a lot of accessories available such as a Ultrabay battery, extended battery, docking station, etc...
I have personally not had a good experience with Acer. And if you have a problem with your Acer, then good luck. Their customer service and technical support could use a lot of work. Sometimes, you got to jump through a few loops for their warranty service and even then it is pretty slow. Someone should correct me if I am wrong, but I remember that Acer doesn't even pay for the return shipping on your computer for warranty repair!
Lenovo pays overnight shipping in both directions. And you get to speak with people in Atlanta if you have problems.
The Acer notebooks are good "value" computers in my opinion, but the Ferrari model isn't exactly a value computer. When you start getting into that price range, the Acer service just doesn't cut it. -- The two biggest things: the universe & human stupidity --Albert Einstein |

| I have been looking at some of the IBM's but I do plan on doing a little gaming. I want this laptop to last a while, so getting a good GPU now, means having some room before obsolescense, since games get more and more intensive. I also plan on doing some 3d modeling and animation, both of which are pretty graphics intensive. -- |Networking Help|My Blog| |
