Re: RIT

Did you do that on the academic side? Over in the dorms and apartments, they give us crappy 70KB/s upload to outside of RIT.

Last year, I talked to Resnet and they tried BSing me. They said it was my computer. I confirmed the appx. 70KB/s cap by going to different dorms using different people's computers. I went back this year and asked to talk to one of their higher-ups and he confirmed they cap us.

He said if there's enough demand, they'll try raising the upload by a few hundred kbps and see how much it affects the network. I think that's BS though... still waiting.

The guy also said we have more than 2 OC3's now.

What I've been seeing lately (outside our 100mbps RIT network) is:
Academic side - 8ms pings to NYC; 50000kbps down/10000 kbps up
Residential side - 15ms pings to NYC; 30000kbps down/500 kbps up

They block port 25, 135, 139 and 445.

Correct, one of the special interest floors (not saying which one:)) has the same caps as the Academic side.

what's the speed like in the dorms during the school year? does everything slow down? Also, are there limits in place on how much you can upload?

Nope, doesn't slow down. Speed stays the same 24/7. No limit I've been yelled at for but it's capped at about 70KB/s. I download and upload a lot, and no one has said anything. There's people who do tons more than me, and they don't get introuble either.

Well you can upload a lot. I think it is 70KB per connection. So with BitComet my friend hit 2MB/s uploading. You can easily upload a couple TB a month.

I could go for that =)

I'm told they have two OC-3's to the internet, an OC-12 to Internet2/Abilene, and an OC-12 to NYSERnet. You should be uncapped on the I2 side of things even in Resnet, ports should be open to the I2 blocks as well.

Lots of p2p applications run over I2, just use it to connect to the other schools and fetch what you need.

Back in the I2Hub days, I think that used the normal internet, since people would download from us at only 500kbps.
