verizon starting to cap newsgroups

Has anyone noticed the newsgroups are getting very slow? Verizon changed their TOS on November 23 to include this:

We also reserve the right in our sole discretion, with or without notice to you, to modify or restrict the bandwidth available to download content from our Usenet Newsgroup services.

I can't seem to get much more than 150Kbs down (even with 4 channels open) now. A few weeks ago my connection was always maxed out.

Well at some hours it takes 5-6 threads to max out my 1200kbps speeds. Did you try a program that lets you open up 8 threads? About how much did you download before it started doing this?

My speeds dropped off along time ago, maybe 10 months or so. I can still max out my line by opening multiple connections, but a single connection won't get me any more than 60 kB/s at most now.

Well I can't get any more than 10 kB/s right now, but that's a completely different issue.

Welcome to 2004...It's been going on for almost a year now, so it's nothing new...Sometimes you get full speed (if you're lucky) and sometimes you don't....It has been getting worse the past few months, but if you get about 10 downloads going at the same time, you will still get full speed.

edit: However it is NOT capped.

I agree (that it is NOT capped), late last night (12 or 1 ish at night), I'd be getting 300-350 kb/sec. Right now I'm getting 150 kb/sec with 8 connections. Grabit is a good program that allows 8 connections.

Verizon says in their terms of service that they only want people to use a max of five channels. Will they do anything if I use more?

They really need to allocate more bandwidth to the news servers...it almost seems like they are sabotaging their news service. I've also been getting tons of incompletes.

@verizon.ne

You'll get a connection error that says too many connections open.
THey had a hardware malfunction a few days ago that affected completeness.
Otherwise, I haven't had any problems with articles being incomplete, and speed goes up and down thru out the day.

You "Verizon People" sure complain a lot!

Most of you guys are on the Cheepo $29.95 plan with the newsserver included! I would happy to have that!

Check my bill out. Comcast HSI only $60.95/month +$20/month for the Newsserver= Better than $80 a month!

You poor bastard! I'll just sit here and cry my eye's out thinking about your 150/kb sec newsserver downloads!

OOPS! I have been running 8 connections with Grabit on and off for over a month and Verizon has never sent out the "newsgroups police". Do they care if you only have 8 connections for a couple of hours 2 or 3 times a week.

WTF is it to YOU???? I'll never understand why OUTSIDERS come into our group with their panties in a knot because we want to get the most out of the service we pay for!

Do we go into their group and complain to them about whatever it is they're bitching about?

tis a great resource for searching actual discussion groups, but for those that leech off the binaries groups google is useless.

GrabIt although refreshing large (read: groups will 1m posts) can be painfully slow during the indexing portion. NBZ-type files can eliminate the need for this.

As for the "capping"...hello people. Did you really think it was going to last? Sure it was (relatively) easy when everyone was at 768 or 1500 speeds. But now many people are at the 3000 speeds and the lucky few with FiOS are also leeching at 5 and 15mbits. No ISP in the world is going to provide a news server that can support a 15mbit connection to thousands of concurrent connections. An incoming newsfeed already is measured in the TB on a daily basis.

If you want to leech off of a usenet connection, you are going to have to find a Usenet provider such as easynews or giganews.

I'm a new verizon DSL customer as of today. Switching from Adelphia HSI and so far verizon is great. I have tried out the usenet service on verizon and its good. But what is the monthly download limit?

adelphia used to give out 5gigs free and outsourced it to giganews

Currently Verizon has no monthly download limits. Verizon runs its own news servers.
