| Re: [ Express] sending in outlook express... Correct. You must send mail out through Rogers Yahoo! SMTP servers, OR if you have external hosting, it must be capable of using an alternate "Submission port" as an Mail Submission Agent(MSA), as opposed to a Mail Transport Agent(MTA)
This is to stop spam, especially from zombie bot nets.

| Re: [ Express] sending in outlook express...You don't have to use Rogers email ... You can *receive* mail on your system, but you cannot SEND email through it, even with your own domain name in the From: address or Reply To: address.
E.G.
User name: JohnSmith@myowndomain.ca SMTP server: smtp.broadband.rogers.com POP server: pop.myowndomain.ca
Any mail you send will look something like ...
From: JohnSmith@myowndomain.ca Received: from smtp.rog.mail.re2.yahoo.com by someserver.somedomain.com Received: from unknown (HELO mycomputer) (yourusername@rogers.com@70.26.xxx.xxx with login) by smtp102.rog.mail.re2.yahoo.com with SMTP; 27 Nov 2005 01:31:03 -0000
So, when they reply, it goes to JohnSmith@myowndomain.ca not to rogers.com

| Re: [ Express] sending in outlook express... To get outside Rogers network you have two choices ...
1) User Rogers servers ... and who cares if it has a rogers yahoo server in the headers? What matters is that the From: gets it back to you@yourdomain. (There are actually SOME issues that I have with using Rogers Yahoo! servers but that's another matter).
2) Use a Mail host or web host offering mail and host your mail servers out there ... but the domain host must allow connection on a port other than 25. I used Canaca ... they don't, so for now, I use Rogers servers for outbound mail, but it still LOOKS like it comes from me@mydomain
You cannot use mail servers hosted on your own system which is connected to Rogers ... and that's to stop the spread of spam and viruses and is a good thing, even if a nuisance.

What outgoing error are you getting? Should be something like 0x800CCC--. Are the outgoing server settings correct? Are you required to use authentication - username/password? I'm a student and I can't send emails through my University of Toronto account anymore because of Rogers.
Its pretty much the straw that broke my back, I'm switching over to Sympatico as soon as xmas break starts.

| Re: [ Express] sending in outlook express... And you'll find that it won't be long before Sympatico does the same thing. This is becoming common practice by most ISPs because they need to block the outbound spam and viruses being sent through these bot nets ... for every trojan'ed machine, there are thousands of new machines getting infected and joining these botnets daily. This is one of the only ways to stop it.
Try changing the port for your SMTP mailer to 587 ... that should probably work ... or ask your UofT admin if they have an alternate port.

This is one of the only ways to stop it. Try changing the port for your SMTP mailer to 587 ... that should probably work ... or ask your UofT admin if they have an alternate port. I work at the UofT help desk and we deal with this issue almost every day it seems. We don't offer an alternate port for email. However as we tell everyone, which has been posted here, it is no big deal. Just change your smtp server to use rogers, and make sure you authenticate the outgoing connection with your Rogers username and password and your all set, still looks like the message is coming from your UofT account, unless someone feels the need to actually go through the message headers, which would be not be the norm.
As for Sympatico, they also do this, and actually to some extent it is worse. Sympatico also blocks the standard outgoing smtp port for all 3rd party servers, however they do not require outgoing server authentication with a sympatico username and password. What is worse with sympatico is that their newer smtp servers, smtph.sympatico.ca prevent even this workaround and reject any outgoing email that does NOT include a return address containing @sympatico.ca so people who use that smtp server are pooched.

| said by geestring :yea.. 587 should work.. in telnet i make contact with my mailservers... something in outlookk... Definitely something in MS Outlook Express. Some mail providers giving access to port 587 are requiring STARTTLS for authentication. MSOE can only do STARTTLS on port 25; I have not found a way to enable STARTTLS on any other port in MSOE.
Also, if smtp.broadband.rogers.com is a Yahoo! server, it should require authenticated log in. When you set up MSOE, do check "My server requires authentication" on the server properties tab. Do not check "Log on using Secure Password Authentication". That is some kind of proprietary MSFT thingy. Shows you where MSFT wants you to go; giving you a little used MSFT-only secure password protocol, but not a more widely used generic secure password protocol! -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum
