| StarForce Copy Protection
There are many copy protections like Safedisc, Securom, etc. but why is starforce the most dreaded/hated? I have heard people cancelling their pre-orders when they find out that the game uses starforce copy protection. What is the main reason behind this? -- It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up again |

I thought the reason is because it's harder to crack than traditional protection. |

Some have even mentioned that should such malfunctioning drive be placed in any other PC without starforce protection installed it will fail to work as well. |

| NO, to prove that it messes up CD/DVD drives, not just write to their firmware.
There have been a lot of rumors in the Internet concerning DVD/CD writers malfunction after installation and star-up of starforce protected applications. Some have even mentioned that should such malfunctioning drive be placed in any other PC without starforce protection installed it will fail to work as well. |

Just writing to the firmware could easily hose a CD or DVD drive. I can't think of anything else you could do that would transfer to another computer if you pulled the drive from a starforce installed computer and stuck it in a second computer that had never had starforce installed.
I doubt they're doing this but would never rule anything out these days. |
