Your System - December 2005

Post your system specs if you've built/bought a new system during the month of December.

If you've changed your system, put "ADDED" next to the new component(s).

If you haven't changed anything - don't post!

Biggest change is my mom's new computer, an HP/Compaq
Presario SR1616NX. Here are its stats:

CPU AMD Sempron 1800 MHz (2x900), 3200+
Video Adapter ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Series (256MB)
Monitor 19" LG Flatron L1981Q LCD
RAM 512MB PC3200 DDR400 (Infineon 64D32301HU5B)
HDD Seagate Barracuda SATA 100GB
CD/DVD Toshiba/Samsung 16X DVD-ROM/52-32-52X CDRW
Printer Canon Pixma i4200 Photo Printer

For Internet connectivity, it has a Linksys WMP54G
wireless adapter card. Too much trouble to run Ethernet
cable through the attic.

As for my system, a few changes:
One of my Maxtor OneTouch drives died a few weeks ago. I
replaced it with a Seagate 400GB External USB/Firewire
model. Also added to my system is a Motorola SB5120
Cable Modem, and a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router connected
to it and my second NIC.

My first build:

Antec 1050B case with Smartpower 500 watts (Mid-tower)

Chaintech VNF4

AMD 3500+ Venice, 512K L2 Cache ('CPU in a box', with approved heatsink and fan)

Chaintech-branded chipset fan (all advertising photos showed passive cooling, so I was happy to get active cooling)

Chaintech nvidia 6600, 256 MB RAM

2 x 512 Kingston value RAM, operating as dual-channel

2 x 80 GB Seagate 7200 RPM SATA, single-platter drives

Floppy

CD-ROM/DVD reader

This all-black monolith is dead quiet and produces no heat.

The only thing left to do is replace the CD and floppy ribbon cables with round ones, just for looks.

Assembly problems were minimal:

The Logitech keyboard assigns F6 to a special function, meaning I had to use another keyboard for Windows to load the SATA drivers from the floppy;

Each SATA drive requires a dedicated power cable to the PSU; you cannot plug two SATA power cables into one power cable to the PSU.

I love it, and I'll never buy a pre-assembled again.

-Bob
