If I was going to build a computer from scratch for an Asterisk box....what do I need?
I know it does not require the as much power as a new computer....but I don't have a old computer.
How could I either get a old computer....for this purpose...or what should I build? |

| reply to Newbie2005 Building a computer just for Asterisk might end up being over kill. You could see if there are any local computer repair shops that have a decent computer for a hundred bucks or less. You don't need anything powerful. For example my asterisk box is a 533 celeron and it routinely does five or six channels at once with out even using a third of the processor. Though I would still try to find something around 1 Ghz or higher, so you'll be set for the future.
Good luck, PhilAIV |

| reply to Newbie2005 For home use, right?
I would go with a box that has at least 600mhz and 256mb memory. You'll need at least one network card. A 6gb drive is good enough. All together, you can get a good deal for this kind of box on eBay.
You'll probably need a monitor and keyboard to configure the box. Otherwise, you don't really need them for normal operation.
One thing to consider is that the box is going to be running 24x7. Minimizing the power requirements is going to help with the electric bill and minimize the size of the UPS that you're going to need to keep it running. |

| reply to Newbie2005 I use mine for home use. It is an AMD 750 with 265K ram and a 30G hd (more than enough space). You really don't need a speed machine. I think the * minimum requirement is listed @ 300 Mhz. A good name brand P/S would be nice because it will be running 24/7.
Buying a used system would be ideal. A) You're recycling B) you're saving time C) you don't have to source all the components yourself (saving money).
Another thing you can do is use your current rig for * and get a new machine for yourself (If budget allows) -- Bananna split for my baby, a glass of plain water for me! |
