| POP server problems, please help
Hi folks, I read the other thread on this, but since it was being discussed as an "Outlook" issue, I wanted to post a new thread on this here. I do not use Outlook, but am using Apple MAIL on my Powerbook G4. I've not had ANY problems with my mail receiving or sending at all until about a week or so ago.
Now, everytime I try to GET my mail from the POP YAHOO SBC server a little window box pops up that says the following:
Enter Password for Account "POP:myacc.namehere@postoffice.swbell.net"
The POP server "pop.swbell.yahoo.com" rejected the password for user "myaccount@swbell.net"
Please re-enter your password or cancel.
Sometimes I only have to re-enter my password ONCE to get my mail. Other times, I don't even get this window, but then other times I have to keep entering my password 4 or 5 times before it FINALLY gets my mail for me. And I haven't changed any settings or anything else. Can anyone help me out with this? It is very annoying to say the least, sigh.
Thanks folks, Renée |

| have you tried telnetting into the pop server to see what it says? telnet to pop.swbell.yahoo.com port 110. (see instructions at »www.yuki-onna.co.uk/email/pop.html) -- my website: »www.utdallas.edu/~bal023000 |

| No, I haven't tried it. At this moment I'm getting my emails just fine. But later on, I'll start getting the same message that I posted above even though I haven't messed with any settings on my computer. I just hope it gets fixed. I wonder if I need to post about this at the SBC Direct? |

| That's why I was wondering if you'd tried it. Please do, so you can see if you're getting the same message: -ERR maildrop not available.
If you are getting that message when trying to telnet to the mail server, then yes--definitely post in SBC Direct. -- my website: »www.utdallas.edu/~bal023000 |

Could you give step by step directions to telnet into the mailserver? I'd like to try it and see what happens. |

| Hi Apeface,
I'm on an Apple Powerbook G4 using Apple MAIL as my mail program. It's always been perfect until the last few days with this problem. I am, once again, getting the above "password" message constantly now, and can NOT access my mail anymore. It's like it is stuck or something.
I just tried to do what was asked of me earlier, and that was to go to the server via telnet. I did so using my Apple, and I got the following message:
Last login: Thu Dec 8 16:46:22 on console Welcome to Darwin! [myapple:~] renee% [myapple:~] renee% telnet pop.swbell.yahoo.com 110 Trying 68.142.229.13... Connected to pop-sbc.mail.yahoo.com. Escape character is '^]'. +OK hello from popgate(2.33.3) USER myaccount@swbell.net +OK password required. PASS xxxxx PA-ERR maildrop busy. USER myaccount@swbell.net +OK password required. PASS xxxxx -ERR maildrop busy.
I keep getting that ERR MAILDROP BUSY stuff, and now I can't receive ANY of my emails. I hope this helps. If you need more info, please let me know and I'll try my best to get it to you. (By the way, I put x's where my password is supposed to be because of posting the info here) |

| Well, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I sent myself several "test" emails. Finally, after re-entering my password several times, I received one of the test emails. SO....I decided to try the telnet connection once again. This time I was able to get in:
Last login: Thu Dec 8 16:57:53 on ttyp1 Welcome to Darwin! [myapple:~] renee% telnet pop.swbell.yahoo.com 110 Trying 68.142.229.13... Connected to pop-sbc.mail.yahoo.com. Escape character is '^]'. +OK hello from popgate(2.33.3) USER myaccount@swbell.net +OK password required. PASS xxxxx +OK maildrop ready, 0 messages (0 octets) (0 2147483648)
So, you see, sometimes it will let me in, and sometimes it won't. I sure hope this can be fixed soon. I appreciate your work on this Apeface, and all others who are trying to fix this. Oops, my MAIL program is asking me for my password again, gotta go, sigh. |

| reply to ReneeRC I have been having this problem for a couple of weeks on an sbcglobal.net email address. In Outlook, if I hit cancel it gives the maildrop unavailable error. If I click OK, most of the time it checks just fine. Lately it is bringing the password prompt up more frequently, and hitting OK is not working every time. I am also starting to get the password prompt for my pacbell.net email address. I have posted in the SBC Direct forum, but they have not had any ideas as of yet. And I tried the on line chat support through the SBC Help pages, just a waste of my time, he kept telling me it is an Outlook issue. I know that it is not when there are tons of people on here with every mail program under the sun with the same problem. |

| reply to ReneeRC There is an ongoing discussion on the Apple support pages regarding this very annoying problem. The password problem has been ongoing for several weeks if not months and seems to be getting worse. Affecting Mac OSX Mail and Eudora and other Mac email clients. Personally, I'm glad to see it's not just a Mac problem -- hopefully the issue can be resolved for all of us soon!

| reply to ReneeRC Ooops! The address for the Apple discussion I posted previously may not work -- looks like it's getting truncated. Try this one:

If this doesn't work, go to apple.com then support / discussions / Applications / Mail and AddressBook and find the topic: "Mail Rejects Passwords. Why?" |

| reply to Flippant Thanks Flippant. This annoyance seems to come and go for me. So far this evening, I haven't had that "rejected password" problem anymore on my Mac. I sure hope it means that the problem is fixed. |

| reply to ReneeRC This issue seems to be fixed for me now. I wanted to wait awhile to see if the popup window rejecting my password returned, but so far, it is all back to normal now.
THANKS SBC TECH'S!!!
Me and my Apple Mail appreciate it very much! |
