Re: Email issues fixed

From SBC:
As you are already aware, SBC Internet Services has been experiencing what constitutes as an outage affecting our POP3 and SMTP mail servers, which generates and error message/pop up in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. At this time, there is no announced Estimated Time of Completion for the resolution of this problem.

As a result, we are recommending to our customers to use webmail in the interim, until the server problems can be cleared up. Webmail can be accessed through either sbc.yahoo.com website, or more directly through mail.yahoo.com. Once at the site, simply login with you username and password and mail can be sent from there, circumventing Outlook/Outlook Express.

Thanks for the update.

However, webmail is not a workable solution, not even an acceptable workaround. I need my sent mail to be saved locally, as has always been, not split between the local "message store" and sbc/yahoo's "web folders".

Still hope that they'll follow up on this with an actual fix.

Sorry but thats a tapdance. They say that it constitutes an outage. In most computing related businesses, an outage is just that, its a Priority 1 event that pulls out all the stops until resolved. Where does it say that we, as stakeholders, will be updated until resolved? After all we pay for this service and it doesnt work as promised.

I didnt sign up for web based email, my subscription is supposed to give me pop access.

BTW, does any other email program, i.e. Eudora, Netacape Messenger, Thunderbird, etc, do this? I know that I have other pop accounts (using the same settings within outlook) that work fine, but SBC/Yahoo says that it only is affecting Outlook and Outlook Express. Hmmmmmmm......methinks that they might be barking up the wrong tree.....

Regarding whether any other email programs also have
problems, Yes. I have Mac and a P.C. Notebook, run
Thunderbird and also Outlook on the p.c.

Both have problems, also the webmail.
Less problems Wednesday morning. Downloaded from 2
sub accounts to Thunderbird, operated normally.

I kinda feel the same way you do about this... plus the recent DSL throughput issues that have been going on for the past 2 months.. The throughput has been fixed (so we think) and I am sure this will to..

The problem with getting as upset as you seem to be is that we have a consumer service, not a business class service. There is no 100% reliability guarantee or a minimum downtime guarantee.. I do not agree with it but that is how it is and I refuse to loose any sleep over an issue that is merely an inconvenience. Yes it is irritating, yes it sucks and so on but it will be back up. It's not like they are ignoring it;)

Be patient, enjoy the time away from your email (I know I do)

Was this an e-mail they sent you, or posted somewhere publicly? This is one of few threads were I've seen comments where they actually acknowledge the problem.

Regarding the pop looping authentication issue...

Yahoo has discovered a problem with thier Database. Appearantly they are finding errors which can be causing intermitant issues for us.

The person im talking to doesnt know exactly whats going on, but this is what the engineers told him.

More news as i get it.

This is the latest message I received from SBC today:

As of 8:06 am PST, there have been no further updates on the email situation affecting SBC Internet customers using mail clients to acces their mail. We are still advising customers to use webmail at mail.yahoo.com or sbc.yahoo.com in the interim.

Also, those who have sent log files from their Outlook or Outlook Express can turn off the log file, as it will continue to grow if logging isn't disabled. Below are the instructions for both Outlook and Outlook Express. Please reply to this message or call me at the number below if you have any questions.

Yahoo has at this time implimented a patch that should resolve most of the looping authentication issues. Specifically the "-ERR maildrop unavailable"

If you continue to see this occur, please create a thread in the SBC Direct Forum with the connection log file.

Good to hear.

At this point, id say, monitor it for about a week.

If after that ya still see some errors, put them in a notepad and repost it in the direct forum.

Got this email this morning:

As of 11:02 am PST, there have been no further updates on the email situation affecting SBC Internet customers using mail clients to acces their mail, however I am expecting a status update sometime today.

I shall be sending another email as soon as I get the next update.

Again thank you for your patience in this matter.
That said, I still have not had any issues this weekend.
