| [Other] VoIP blocked by telecom monopoly - how to bypass
Hi all, I currently in a middle-eastern country. I have been using Vonage/Primus/Sunrocket for several months. Last week, local telecom monopoly started blocking VoIP. All the above services have stopped working.
I have found out that telco is using NarusLI to intercept and block VoIP traffic. Skype and vbuzzer services still work. But their websites are blocked by the proxy server.
It would be great if anyone can give tips on to bypass the telco to get the VoIP working. Vonage/Sunrocket won't change their ports for few users. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks in advance

1 edit | Try Packet8. They work off of SIP port 15062. Maybe that port isn't blocked (yet).
You can also try to VPN into an external network (i.e. one out of the country you're in) and feed your VoIP adapter its internet access that way; however, the overhead and distance involved may anyway all but kill the effectiveness of VoIP.

| Thank you Rizzo. I will explore Packet8. I am thinking about Point to Point VPN but could not find anyone who could provide that service. If anyone knows of a service provider with this service, please let me know.
I think VPN solution might be better than opting for Satellite.
Thank you

Vonage is another provider not on a standard SIP port. They utilize port 10000/UDP for SIP. Being that Packet 8 is a smaller provider gobhat may have better luck with them not being blocked.
That said, there is always XTunnels. You can tunnel the data (like VPN) over to XTEN's servers and then out. I believe XTen/Counterpath's XTunnel server is at xtunnels.xten.net:13840. You can find more information about XTunnels at:
»xtunnels.org:3455/1/Home
You can also google for other public/open XTunnels servers. |

| Wow !... I am also in the middle east and Vonage suddenly died 10 days ago. I am seeing the phone port light come on at random tiems during the day for about 5 minutes, but when I try to place a call, it doesn't connect and then the lights go off again. I was not aware that the telco was behind this ...
gobhat: how did you find out that they used NarusLI? is there a test or soemthing that I can run to verify? have you figured a solution yet? please keep me posted as I am fed up with this whole VoIP blocking trend. |

Take a look at your private messages as well. I've been thinking about monowall.
The UAE Is using Bitek rather than Narus. I'd be interested in hearing your comments as well.

Hi all,
I am back online with Satellite Little expensive but I will put up with it for the convenience for having my US number and NOT paying to the local ISP.
Thanks to everybody for their suggestions.

| Do you mind sharing the satellite provider? or at least a list of providers that you considered?
By the way, I saw on the vonage forum that the issue of VoIP blockage in Qatar was brought to the attention of the American Embassador and that he contacted the local telco to try and reverse that decision. That seems like a long shot to me ... but it's probably worth a try.
