Bit Torrent Uploads Being Disconnected

The following was posted by someone on another list; I have added some explanations incase some of the terminology is unfamiliar. I have the same problem (we are both in New York) but I have seen postings from people in Boston describing this as well. It's almost as though RCN are blocking any bit torrent uploads. Any thoughts?
***************
I am also having a problem connecting to peers. This has been happening for several days.

I am able to download fine with a fully open port; green light (i.e., no firewall issues). When the same torrent begins to seed (i.e., download is complete and we are only seeding) it looks to DaD (on my profile page)as if it's seeding, but on my end goes blue with no connections to peers. (DaD is a torrent site).

I have removed all seeds and tried this with a torrent seeded today with the same result. The May 15th issue is not the problem. Firewallis not the problem

When a torrent downloads, it does so with a "green light" and no error. When the same torrent goes to seed, I get this error message on my profile page: protocol error 1, no/erroneous BT client listening or misconfigured router.

When this started I was using Azureus 2.3.0.6. I uninstalled that and re-installed 2.3.0.4 with the same result. Then I uninstalled Azureus and tried with utorrent and had the same problem again. I changed ports and, again, had the same problem (with both programs. (I've also tried ABC 3.1 and Azureus with the same result).

I've made no changes to my system.I have phoned RCN support and they say there is not problem on their end. I see that others are having a similar problem and I'd be very grateful for help.

I use XP SP1 with a LAN cable.

Ah, that was my post. I've spent the entire day today taking my system apart - software, router, & cable modem - and running tests on all. It's pretty clear to me that the problem coming from elsewhere. A second call to RCN brought no answers.

I'm running XP2 with a Netgear RP614v2 router and the 3com "sharkfin" modem that came with my RCN package.

Edit 1: A third call reached a tech person who said with assurance that RCN does not and will not block P2P, including torrenting, and suggested that I get a new router.

Edit 2: Router's mac address is 00:09:5B:5A:A0:8B. Modem's is 00:50:da:f0:e5:e0.

I reached a very helpful RCN tech support person tonite who thought that the problem might be due to my account being flagged for virus activity.

My system is contantly secured against viruses, so he assumed that the exchange of torrent packets (ie to multiple recipients) indicated a virus activity to the RCN system and asked that i wait 24 hours for the flag to be lifted. I'll do that and see what happens.

Grateful for any other thoughts...

Let's hope this is the answer!

I know sometimes torrent activity can raise the virus flag. The only thing I noticed was my ICMP pings being dropped (and I guess being disconnected, although I never was).

The solution to clear this flag (as I found out on these forums I believe) is to reset your modem.

Well, resetting the modem had no positive effect for me.

I did phone RCN support tonite before re-connecting with Azureus to be sure that the virus flag had been dropped before I re-started the software. Support confirmed that the flag had been dropped.

Unfortunately, the problem remained exactly the same.

I re-phoned support and they asked me to exchange my old 3com cable modem for a new one. I'll do that tomorrow & report back with the results.

Ok. I was able to download a torrent and then, for a time, continue seeding.

Nevertheless, there is still a relatively quick dropoff of clients after seeding begins. At this point both of the torrents that I downloaded last night are stopped, at a low share ratio, when they could still be sharing (there are still leechers, and my client still says it's seeding, but the leechers are not connecting).

Then, when I tried seeding a torrent that I had uploaded recently, for which there are now waiting leechers and no seeders, it broke the system. The seed died and there's an error message on my DaD profile page again (same message as before).

While replacing my hardware may have made a difference, I'm still interested in the idea that this may have to do with torrent sharing being flagged by RCN for virus-like activity.

If my system was flagged by RCN, why not others? And perhaps other systems have banned my connection for a longer period, maybe permanently? Maybe Azureus' IP filters are blocking my uploads? Would that be possible?

It's not a router problem. The modem and router are new and GRC and Azureus tests both show that my port is open. It's not a software problem because the error occurs when testing with multiple software packages. And RCN says it's not the connection. So what's left?

No - the 3Com tailfins are notorious for this problem. Their 10MB WAN ports don't do well with dealing with the collisions at higher speeds. If your problems don't go away with a new modem, I'll eat my virtual hat.

But nozzer, I have this same problem and I haven't touched my modem. I noticed when it started about a week ago. I would have no problems with downloads, but when the task finishes, my connection is reluctant to connect to other peers and seed. Same with when I upload a torrent, there are peers waiting to download but for some reason BitComet/Azureus/BitTornado/Utorrent don't start sending to those peers..

Is it really because there is a flag on my user set by RCN? I'm going to call right now.

Well, Noz I hope you're hungry and your hat is tasty... I have replaced the modem and router and the problem persists.

Interesting though, whatever the cause, that the complaints I have seen (here and on the DaD forums) are coming from RCN (NYC & Boston).

Hmm - well I use bit torrent in a big way in the Boston market, and it just runs and runs (over 4 weeks now without a disconnect). I use utorrent, and have a motorola SB5100 modem. What did they replace your tailfin with?

XP SP2? You need to increase the limit for 1/2 open connections possibly.

Windows XP SP2 limits half-open connections (SYN) to a maximum of 10 (the previous limit was over 65,000). This is supposed to slow down certain viruses because their spreading strategy is to try to connect to a high amount of random IP numbers.

I don't think it's the 4226 error problem. I checked for 4226 errors and found one or two, but not lots and none recently.

Anyway I've applied the patch and am downloading from 2 different trackers. One says I'm connected and the other says I'm firewalled (Azereus & GRC say my port is open).

Let's see what happens when the torrents go to seed...

John

No... the flies have downloaded and the torrents are dead (blue health). The 4226 patch didn't help.

Well I just did a check by using Azureus instead of utorrent. I can seed completed torrents fine, and they show green, and upload data to others. Have you tried it without the router in the loop, just to eliminate that as the cause?

Noz, yes, I've tried without the router. That was one of the first things I tried...

Today I tried downloading a torrent using a different computer, same network, to see if it's related to the main computer's software configuration. Same problem...

To make things even stranger, my premium cable channel died and RCN couldn't fix it...
