1 edit | [XP Home] Unmountable Boot Volume, can't repair Hi everyone. I'm getting the "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" message when I try to start up. So it appears that the file system is damaged. I've attempted to repair it with XP disc, as decribed here: »The Broadband Reports Windows XP FAQ »UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE? Help! What do I do?
However, it has not been successful. After it loads the initial stuff (like when it asks about Raid drivers, etc. which seems to go much slower than usual) then it says "starting windows" in the blue at the bottom, and it hangs there for ages, then I get a BSOD that says "Page_Fault_in_nonpaged area"....
Also, when i first boot up, it now takes forever for it to "detect IDE drives" so I'm wondering if my hard drive is completely dying? Its only 2 years old: an 80 GB Western digital 7200 RPM, 8 MB cache....I have noticed a couple new clicking noises since this ordeal began.
I have some data that I would like to recover if possible, so I hesitate to attempt to re-install windows.
If I get a new hard drive, do you think I'll be able to transfer some files over? |

You may or may not be able to copy the files. Depending on the importance of the files you might have to use/purchase third party software like SpinRite 6.0 or HDD Regenerator 1.51 to recover what you can.

be very patient though, it might take Spinrite (using level 2) days to fix errors

 | Well it seems that the drive may be completely dead since it won't even detect it anymore Any hope for me?

| At this point, 'stick a fork in it, it's done'.
Sounds to me like the controller board on the hard drive died. Now, you may be able to get a duplicate board by buying the exact same hard drive and swapping the boards, but if you say that it was clicking, it may not be worth the trouble. -- WedgeAntilles250

 | Yep, it is officially toast
Just bought a 300GB Seagate (16 MB cache) for $99 to replace it. Plus the Western Digital that just crapped out is still under warranty, so I'm goign to send it back, but they'll probably just replace it and junk this one, so my data is most likely never to be seen again.... |

|
 | The Seagate is Ultra ATA
So so you think I will have any luck if I buy the exact same HD and try to switch the boards? It really only clicked the first time the computer froze and I got the initial BSOD, and it clicked steady for a few seconds, but nothing too hideous.
If it is easy to do and will most likely work, I'm willing to give it a try |
