Alternatives to Motorola DVR?

Is there any HD STB alternative to Insight's $13/mo rental of a Motorola 6412 DVR? A Springfield, Il CSR told me I had to use their box to receive premium channels. I currently subscribe to their digital package plus some premium channels, and just bought a Panasonic 26" HD ready monitor (no tuner).

I see BeachAudio is selling an RCA ATSC11 HD STB for $140. Recording off TV is not a high priority. Also, I read about problems with the 6412. The CSR couldn't tell me if it was the upgraded PIII model, or whether the newer 3412 was available.

Any cablecard ready HD STB should be sufficient.

Thanks for the reply. My HD monitor is a Panasonic CT-26WX15. It is a CRT. No cable card slot, unforunately.

One of the niceties of cable companies is that there usually aren't contracts. So, why don't you just try the 6412 for a month and see if it meets your needs? If you don't think it's worth the monthly fee, dump it. You'll be out a whole 15 bucks.

Don't put too much into the negative comments you read here. The unit is pretty nice and only has a few minor quirks which can be solved with a little Googling.

"a few minor quirks"

Your joking right? The last round of firmware for this unit broke almost all of the features your average person would want the dual tuner unit for. The negative comments around here are well deserved. Because neither the manufacturer or the cable company seem to be in a hurry to fix the issue. If the unit worked as it should. Yes I would give it a thumbs up. Because it would meet my needs. As it stands now - thumbs down until they resolve the functionality problems.

If you can find an alternative that you feel will meet your needs. It might be worth going that route. But as was mentioned above. Trying the unit out for a month or two wouldn't be any big loss.

Must be a user issue, due to we have had no problems what so ever with our DVR. I am siding with tirebiter, due to the negative is from people that rant about the little stuff, and that is only 1%.

I meant the STB should have a cablecard slot, not necessarily the TV.

I am not sure, but maybe my 6412 is try to download a new firmware, has died, or most likely has died trying to dl a new firm ware. Watchng TV about 5:30 am the box made that pop sound like when you power up, then started doing this litte circle thing with a dl. Then it does that pop and starts all over again. Sigh, I hope I don't need a truck roll.

The update includes Services Lock, and Screen Saver Setup. And in Guide setup includes About Us. New Firmware is 12.22 dated Aug 8, 2005 18:08:20.

Like what? My two units work fine. I know you had mentioned being baffled by the mute feature when recording out of power-down but a little Googling would solve that.
