[Other] Is Via Talk down again?

I try to make calls and I get a busy tone. I try receiving calls and I get a busy tone. I try to call their support from a cell phone and I still get a busy tone. I tried resetting my adaptor through their site and that still doesn’t work. Is this happening to anyone else?

I just made and received a call in Idaho and I'm fine. I've calling throughout the day without a problem.

Yeah - it's been going up and down all evening. Called tech support (finally getting through after several calls) and they said they are upgrading several components of their system. He went on to say that after each upgrade they have to reboot the entire system.

My question is why they don't do this in the early morning hours (so that it impacts as few people as possible) if they know it's going to cause this kind of downtime. Of course, prior notification would be nice too.

ViaTalk's reliability has been decreasing in the last few months. I think once my current billing cycle is up with them, I'll be moving on. Anyone have any suggestions? VoicePulse is out because they can't port my number. I'm considering SunRocket (as they appear to have gotten some favorable feedback recently). Providers who allow BYOD/Asterisk is a plus, but not required.

Having been in the telephone business, I can never understand why these companies don't do their maintenance in the wee hours of the morning. We always did upgrades and routine maintenance from 2-6am on Sunday. That way the vendors could dial in and if something crashed, the impact would be minimal. Of course, this required a few of us to bed down in the switch room that night.

Emergency repairs are something else, of course. I suspect that the support people may not know the real cause of the problem..only what they are told to say. Upgrade certainly sounds better than crash.

Boolah-

I would consider staying with Viatalk, at least for a while longer, to give them a decent chance to get it all together. SR has been very good, but Viatalk has been good as well, from what I've seen. They had a long outage recently, but now they are upgrading features, which is a good thing. Oftentimes you get some system problems when upgrades are implemented. I don't think they should be penalized for doing something good for their customers, especially as they are implementing these upgrades at no additional charge.

I've been with ViaTalk for five months and when I first signed up, their service was quite good. However, it has become increasingly common that my ViaTalk line doesn't ring when people call - or when I make a call, I get a fast busy signal or simply dead air. I understand that maintenance/upgrades need to be done, but I would expect this type of work to be carried out in the early morning hours and not in the early evening.

Boolah-

They may not have conducted the upgrades in the evening hours. Sometimes new features destabilize the system somewhat until it is tweaked. It may not show up until peak hours (usually early evening.)

Seems like these folks would have dual-server sets, with a secondary set running at light load. You'd get a new release stable on the secondary servers, then shift the load and then upgrade the primary. So as to avoid disruption of service.

Costs more.

But, IT folks don't think like class-5 switch folks.

Hi,

There was a bug that cropped up tonight as a result of a new feature, and was causing intermittant issues with some users. Once reported it was tracked down and fixed... should be good to go now. This was not a result of routine maintenence, upgrades, etc. those are generally done around 3-4am EST.

and so does ViaTalk - callerID with name andreliable faxing - infact, I think you are the one that told me that ... "Go_XXXXXX" if you are going to put down one service and make another sound better, please qualify what you say - you can not keep changing your name and changing who you support without saying why you think ViaTalk's CallerID or faxing is not reliable.

Once again - my 2 cents worth.

I never said their Caller ID w/ Name was better, I was just stating they also have that feature. The faxing is more reliable because my ADT can dial Central station with no problems on my Sunrocket line, it couldnt call with VT. SunRocket uses T.38 so it is going to be more reliable. Also the AC-211 by Telco Systems is proven to provide better call quality than the Linksys or the Sipura.

I don't know about that. The Sipura SPA-2002 I think is a better adapter than the AC-211. Especially with the dialing rules, etc. Also, the SPA-2002 supports T.38 also (not sure if VT does, but their hardware does..). The Linksys PAP2/Sipura SPA-2000 doesn't have the available RAM onboard to support T.38.

VT dosent support T.38. I was talking about the Call Quality. The AC-211 provides better Call, Voice quality.

Call/Voice quality is a subjective thing. Having both providers, I would say VT has better call quality overall than SR.

Well, in her defense people's viewpoints change with exposure. I had Packet 8 last year and it was pretty good, loved the savings and it was not bad, like my cell. Then I got to experience a better codec on someone elses VOIP and my viewpoint changed. P8 was no longer what I wanted for my home phone. I discovered (by reading online) how many more features were available with other providers, and the lower codec was the dealbreaker, at least for me. SR and VP side by side: SR sounded better to me. So, exposure to new things can open eyes.

tj008 is right that sound quality (especially with the exact same codec g711u) is a subjective thing. Oftentimes the phone used can make all the difference in that instance.

I think the intention behind druber's comment is true. Anyone that gets so emotionally involved in a product or service is suspect. It would be like buying a car because of what is in the commercials - ie., its agility on a closed course with a professional driver, its ability to attract people, or its sexy-ness.

Here, we discuss VOIP. It is Internet phone service. Many are good. Few are great. Even fewer are the bomb. They all have their quirks, outages, features, etc. Sticking to the facts is best.
